Magnus Backstedt (spelling?) was on Eurosport the other day, and he reckoned it is not outside the realms of possibiity to take up to a year to fully recover from completing a grand tour if it is your first one. Surely this would be a massive risk, but the desire to complete it must be difficult to overcome if you are feeling reasonably good after 2 weeks.

Not wanting to hijack this thread or nothing, but I live in Habershon Street.

    Motorists do.

That's bizarre - so do I (no 141). If you ever see someone on a Giant TCR Composite (or a Trek 3900 MTB if I'm going to the shops) - that's me

It's a good job he doesn't read this forum...(or maybe he will)

    Such little faith.

He was in it to ride and finish the tour - you don't get that opportunity to quit half way just because the going gets a little tough.

I hope I'm wrong, but I still think it wasn't a good idea for him to finish. He's too young and he will take ages to recover.

But anyway, even if he never rides it again, he's made it to Paris in the Tour de France. No many people can say that.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

It had nothing to do with faith. The Tour is the hardest race on the calendar and it is extremely rare for a neo-pro to ride it, never mind finish. Accepted thinking on this is that young riders need to be gradually introduced to the intensity and duration of the top races, because when they're not they get burned out, i.e. physically and mentally exhausted.

I have nothing but respect for Geraint Thomas as finishing the Tour is a massive achievement. However, I remain concerned that it may have a detrimental effect on his long term career prospects. I hope I'm wrong.

I think we can all agree on that.
