Ever since I started cycling I've hated driving my big ugly fuel guzzling hunk of metal . Unfortunatly I can't get rid of it because I need it for work but if I had a local job a swear I'd sell the bloody thing and rely on pedal power!

Has anybody else got rid of the four wheeled money sapper and took to the road on two wheels only?

I don't own a car but have often thought about getting other people's cars crushed.

  • Just been giving my old VW Campervan a service and changing the plugs.
someone has put one in crossthreaded.

    Tearing my hair out.

I want it fixed to give to my son and then I will be carfree.

guy coming friday morning to repair it.

I put too much force on a spark plug once... after hearing a big crack I looked down and saw the thread part of the blug still in hole.

Wouldn't belive how much trouble that caused me, or should I say money it cost me!

    no - never - i'd cry.

I love my cars and motorbikes as much as my bikes
  • My old Bmw is parked on the drive in front of the garage. The garage has a virgina creeper plant all over it....the plant has grown across from the garage and is starting to cover the front of the car....it's been a while since I wanted to drive. Luckily the wife has an suv(boo hiss) just in case I need a lift anywhere.

both of my cars drink petrol for fun, and one is still costing me a fortune to pay off, but I need it for work, the other was a gift so can't get rid of it just yet

    No Way!!

I've just taken a 19" PC Monitor and a sawn-up 6ft Snooker table to the Council Tip in my car.

I'll be towing my trailer-tent to Spain in Summer and besides that....I like driving sometimes.
  • I haven't owned a car for 7 years and I don't miss the money pit at all. On the very occasional times I've needed a car I just hired one for the hour or day.
I remember the stress when something goes wrong with them.

I ditched mine. For many years I couldnt imagine it was possible to live without a car especially with 4 kids. Ive since found out its actually far more possible than I thought, and the money saved allows you to find solutions to situations that would have otherwise needed a car, or theres the chance to rent one. Im not missing mine one little bit.

When it comes to holiday time we will rent a car or a VW camper or something. If stuff needs to go to the tip theres always the man with a van who will take a load to the tip for œ30.

I had my car broken into on 4 occaisions and several times had cars vandalised in my driving time, actually used to find myself looking out the bedroom window every loud noise [:(] I dont miss that. Even whenits tipping down with rain like it was for my route home today its still better on a bike than in nose to tail traffic. Theres no fun in that sort of driving.

I have still got my rally car, thats off the road anyway at the moment, I am really not sure that im still going to be able to compete next year with so long away from the wheel, but if I cant compete I doubt I will have too many problems selling it off and maybe pickup kart racing or something instead for that kind of fun.

I find it hard to believe how much more liberally I can spend the money now Ive not got that car overhead [:D]

I feel like crushing mine tonight. It had a small chip so I touched up and dumped it at my parents in their garage. Typical apart from the wind its been a nice night and I'd rather have been out on the bike.

If I had a baby elephant, who would take it for walks?

I love my cars too much too! I have four at the moment and the fact that I can only drive one at a time and none when I'm on my bike means no one else drives them which must be good for the environment[:D]

Within a week I got made redundant, car failed it's MOT and I got a great job within cycling distance of home. Result!
That was 14 months ago and the only motorised transport I would want now is a campervan - probably a Bongo.

I moved house 3 months ago and it meant moving far enough away from my work that I didn't want to cycle anymore (30 miles each way).... so I've just got a new job so I can cycle to work again - sweet!

Only downside is that I'll still be making the 30 mile trip twice a week to train with my club so i'll still be maintaining motorised transport but at least I'll not be commuting with it anymore. I hated that!

Definitely thinking of flogging mine. Damn thing costs œ500 a year for insurance, road fund, servicing etc BEFORE you turn the key. It's only a 1 litre Polo which is(according to my pals meant to be) cheap as chips to run. œ500? that's a damn good bottle of wine every Saturday for a year.

Yep, sold mine last October. I feel like I have more freedom without it than with it. Mrs C still has hers though, so that's the family car now. It's the cycling that's brought all this about. And I used to be quite a petrol-head once!

Since I kicked the fags and started cycling, I've gone right off cars. I still need one for work mind, but I've eschewed the prestige models of old in favour of something more modest and less polluting. I recently turned down one of those ginormous VW SUV's as a company car - I was quite proud of myself, whereas Mrs B thought I'd lost the plot [:)]

This is the only motorised vehicle I feel any attachment to now:

I totally agree, but then I am biased

when I was asked what vehicle I wanted as a company car I said a VW Combi I got a Volvo S40 T4, and they coudn't understand why I was underwhelmed.

I put my Smart car up for sale yesterday as I rarely use it.

There a great car and can't really be classed as a gas guzzler, but seeing it sat outside my house as I cycle off to work every morning was getting a bit depressing!

I'll go car-less for a while, but may get a cheap run around to throw the camping gear in and put the bikes on the back of.

Not really - carrying a Marshall 4x12 speaker cabinet and assorted rack mount amplifiers, effects and guitars isn't really possible on the Somec...neither is carrying a an ice hockey bag will body armour, helmet, elbow/leg guards, shorts, skates etc and 2 5ft sticks! The Scenic is there to do a job - carry things (including bikes to more remote parts) and the MR2 is there to do another job...to let me have petrol-powered fun on country roads!!!

One more turn of the wheels...just one!

I've been thinking of getting a small scooter to take me places I need to get to quickly or are REALLY far out

But then again I guess I have busses and trains to help me out
