Ashamedly to me it is the BMX crossing the moon on E.T

It started my love affair with BMX's which transfered to MTB then Road Bikes.

I also like the image of Lance in "its not about the Bike" the photo where he is crossing the finish line with his arms spread wide and a look of absolute glory and fury on his face.

What is this look? New to cycling (well, to bike obsession, more accurately) and am unaware of 'the look'. Any links?

I also would say "that look".
For Cathryn's benefit, there is a steep series of hairpins up to a ski station at Alpe d'Huez, and Armstrong and Ulrich arrived at the foot of it after a long stage in the Tour de France.
The tactics were more complicated, but in simple terms Armstrong let Ulrich think he was struggling. At the start of the climb, in very dark glasses, he turned to stare Ulrich full in the face for a long moment.
He then accelerated up the hill and left him for dead.
Armstrong claimed later that he was simply looking at Ulrich to check for tiredness, but everyone else knows better. It was "Yeah? You want some?". Classic.
Another was the attack by him after his fall at Luz Ardiden; the pat on the back of the breakaway as he destroyed him.

Thanks for the link...Good look!!! Thanks for the context as well, Tony!
  • Too many to mention.

Roche at La Plagne or Hinault and Lemond crossing the line raising each other's arm. I can't remember where but it was at the '86 Tour after all the animosity caused by Hinault's attacks, not that I think for a moment the animosity was forgotten in the gesture. Oh, and who can forget the 1989 Champs Elysee time trial, you had to feel sorry for Fignon and wonder why he hadn't sorted out some tri bars.

And then Hampsten riding through the snow in the Giro, Chiapucci's break to Sestriere in the Tour, any number of Kelly's exploits in the classics, RObert Millar winning the polka dot jersey, the list goes on. It's an amazing sport.

    Mine are generally videos-

I find these really inspirational and often find them a great bost to encourage me to go out and do some training.

The look but also shows Armstrongs phenomonal finish- good soundtrack as well.

    And this-
Armstrong again- good beat and again inspires me to go out and cycle and train and push hard.

For me its "The Tour".Been watching every year since it was first shown on channel 4. Memories too many to mention. One sticks though, can't recall the year. Le mond punctures and the peloton vanishes over the horizon. His team then work their socks off to get him back on. Any one remember what happened, seem to remember he went on to win the stage, not sure though.

Anyone on a bike crossing the finish line with their arms outstretched. Doesn't matter if they're first.

Pantani counts, but G*d what a sad end.

The "boracchia"...Coppi and Bartali sharing a bottle. Film clip used to be used in titles for Giro coverage on RAI in Italy. The still is in a few books. I think you can find it on one of those Coppi v Bartali challenge of the century vids from Bromley TV.

the look on Armstrongs face when he remounted after being brought down by a childs souvenir bag on the Luz-Ardiden in 2003, his face was a mixture of anger, fright, determination, fanstastic moment as he caught and passed the leaders to win the stage, just brilliant.

I think some of the photos I've seen of Merckx powering along awe-inspiring. He is on a lone breakaway or in a time trial, looking so strong and determined.

And I also really like a photo of Lemond and Hinault riding comfortably together and both simultaneously looking high upwards to the finish of a climb (Alpe d'Huez?), sort of expressing confidence they'll get there.

Another favourite is Virenque when he crosses the line first and alone at the end of some mountain stage, after his comeback, so 5-6 years ago. He has his arm raised straight up, as if proving a point and defying his critics.

I also love this photo, which doesn't even include a bike, but shows the joy of having won after 3 weeks hard slog (it's Lemond watching Fignon on a TV screen and realising Fignon isn't going to make it down the Champs Elysee in time).
