Embankment - cycling tickets!

Walking from Temple to Embankment tube stations and back (to visit Action Bikes), and in that brief journey noticed two cyclists being issued with tickets by officers from the Met.

They weren't near traffic lights or one-way systems, but I didn't witness them being stopped so it's possible they didn't dismount whilst on the pavement!

Good to see our local constabulary enthusiastically supporting cycle to work week!

Sounds like it's made your day that the police are finally cracking down on cyclists Hackers.

Personally I would like to see them cracking down on criminals and people who threaten our lives and safety like dangerous/illegal drivers of motor vehicles. I'm sure that would involve them having to actually do some work though so I shan't hold my breath.

Dom, whilst I agree - the police do serve the 'interests' of the public and unfortunately they seem a bit too interested in dodgy cyclists at the moment. Don't forget, 'the public' are all too often incapable of seeing the bigger picture.

I'm happy for the cops to do cyclists for being a nuisance on the pavements and riding in the dark without lights or any vis, that one really does irritate me, jumping lights at junctions too

It's fine to be catching the cyclists, nothing wrong with that. I do wish they'd spend a bit more effort on the lawbreaking drivers though.

Dom you seem to be getting a tad militant lately, surely this can't be good for your zen?

  • All laws are there to be upheld, not just some of them, some of the time. The Police have a tough job trying to do it all at once, and a bl**dy good job they do too. In my opinion letting small breaches of the law go unchecked and exclusively going for the major crimes breeds an undercurrent of misdemeanor that leads to more major crime in the long term.

    <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

That is one thing to say HWK, but when you or your mate gets attaked by some drunken louts, I very much doubt you would say that as we come running.

Or how about someone attacks your missus? What would you say then?

Would you say it as I stand with a dog team in the station, potentially putting our personal safety at risk, trying to catch drug dealers coming off the trains and distributing their products around the town?

What if your gf had gone out drinking in town and her drink had been spiked. She is lying in some bushes on a freezing cold night in a skirt and small top, virtually unconcious? We found a girl just like that, we were patrolling down a street, moving towards a bar that was soon to close for the night, when my colleague spotted the sparkle of her belt. Her parents didn't seem to think that we should be out getting "a f**king life".

    Well said Jacomus.

If people break the law then they should get ticketed/fined whatever. Be it on cycle, car, camel whatever.

    With one exception.

    Pedal reflectors....

It's not a bad law, as such, it's just that very few clipless pedals can be fitted with the things.

(I am still squeaky clean, since my bike is old enough to be exempt.)

    This sig is under construction.
This post contains traces of nuts.

  • jacomes_rides_gen I can assure you if someone attacked my missus I wouldn't hand them to the police!!

And I don't like them either, the amount of times I've needed their assistance, they have been nothing but wan*ers and very unhelpful ie the time when I was mugged outside West Byfleet Train Station 2 years ago, I had got hold of the guy who had attacked me, and I pressed charges against him, but guess what they let him go with a caution the next day!!! talk about ****ing useless!!!
Thats really doing your job properly ain't it letting criminals go with a slap on the wrist!

I don't see how date-rape drugs compare to cycling on pavements, that's a pointless comment really

issueing tickets to cyclist 'offenders' is a little rich though, you're effectively paying for them to be on duty

  • HWK - I am sorry your incident was not dealt with in a way that you felt satisfactory, you should have recieved an explanation to the outcome at the time. Do you remember it at all?

Why would you not report an attack? I assume when you say this you mean that you would rather try and remediate the situation on your own.

Based on that assumption, what would you do?

Have you considered the wider implications of your actions, such as the reaction to your retaliation? The friends of the attacker will support him, no matter what he did to make you assault him or damage his property.

Lets say, simply as an example <b>I'm not implying that you would actually do this! :)</b>, that you assault the guy who attacked your better half. It results in a broken nose and couple of broken ribs for him, you were lucky, you surprised him and beat him down virtually without any resistence. You walk away satisfied justice has been served.

2 weeks later, while he is still hurting, you bump into each other on a night out. He recognises you and he and his friends give you a harsh retribution beating. Much worse than the one you gave him.

Once you feel a bit better, you are pretty angry about this, and get together a bunch of mates. You go out and find this guy and his mates, though you don't wan't a repeat performance of the last incident, so you perhaps arm yourselves with homemade blunt force weapons.

    Repeat and escalate.

    Repeat and escalate.

    Repeat and escalate.

Headline: "Another gang killing takes life of young father"

Does this seem like a fairly realistic (if a little exaggerated) progression you could see happening?

One of the phrases I hear the most is "He/she started it first, mate/bruv/officer. I didn't do anything."
