It WILL rain: Oldwelshy is riding, and it is the Rhondda after all.....[:)]
Time! Time! It's always too long and there's never enough!0 -
The forecast seems to be getting progressively worse as the event gets closer: looks like rainy start, showers at midday, rainy finish. I'll have to think carefully about clothing and waterproofing....0
-
The forecast was good for about 5 minutes yesterday morning. I think knee warmers, arm warmers, a waterproof jacket and some muscle warming stuff might be a good start.
My B&B is a couple of hundred yards from the start/finish so I won't have far to go for a hot shower.0 -
Rain....... ah well it is Wales after all

Maybe, but this isnt JUST rain, this is sun bleached cold filtered rain, drizzled with a touch of sulpuric acid from the finest chimneys of the western face of the Rhondda valleys.

'cough Steve, there isn't a coal fire left in the Rhondda.
As someone as mentioned, the weather on those hills can turn nasty even if it seems ok on the valley floor. A gillet would be a must but I think knee warmers might be over-kill.0 -
like I said, nice weather. I mean I would not want it warm and sunny. Nah better cold and wet and windy for good meaure. Afterall 135 miles would not be a challange otherwise0
-
Not that I'm obsessed with checking the forecast or anything...
but if you look now, it says it will be dry, with a westerly wind, 12 degrees C
that sounds ok to me.0 -

What, do you not have it on an RSS Feed, so you never miss an update [;)] [:D]0 -
As Steve said I am riding so it means it will wee down [:D] as it did for dartmoor and cymru gran fondo.
I am taking 2 bikes if it rains I am definately using my training bike. Due to the extreme weather on the other two rides I went through two sets of brake pads and a clooapsed bottom bracket!!
Who siad the sealed units are better? I almost had to saw off the carbon arm to get damaged bb out!!
According to the met office site, for sun, showers on coast and rain in Beacons!! Not good!
I will take gillet and even consider longs having experienced the GFC!!
I will smear deep heat in legs followed by olive oil, great for making the legs warm and water roll off [:D]
Steve whats your target time?
I am aiming for under 7 hrs.

Latest forecast is a northerly wind of 9 mph. That could be disastrous, since most of the climbing will be done into a head wind. Timewise david, I've not set a target but secretly am hoping for Gold. I'm away on a bleedin plane again tomorrow and back friday, and I know only too well how that messes your lungs up so I've kind of given up on a good time. Bronze it is then...[:)]

Northerly wind? Oh bugger !! That makes that stretch to the Beacons into a direct headwind!!! This straight after Rhigos!
I was hoping it would be westerly so we would have tail wind up bwlch twice and cross wind towards brecon.
I will be looking for a big group after the Rhigos so I can hide on the next climb [8D]

I'll be there too. I expect it to start raining when I cross the bridge on Friday night.FCN 2-4.

Sorry to keep banging on about weather, but given that Metcheck's temporary optimism yesterday seems to have been replaced by more realistic rain and a westerly (thankfully not northerly!) wind, I'd be grateful for other's thoughts about clothing. At the mo, I'm planning bib shorts (my longs are a bit too wintery and warm), cycling jersey and full on waterproof jacket, but I'm bothered that that might be a bit too sweaty. Only alternative I currently have is a showerproof top, but that probably won't be convincing enough for a day's worth of rain. Have also been wondering about overshoes..0
-
I've been riding around the area with, gillet, arm warmers, bib shorts, cycling top and waterproof socks (which aint waterproof!) It might be wet but it's too warm(relatively) for any more, for me. Remember as well it's a kind of race so you're probably going to be working quite hard and you might not want the extra drag of a full on waterproof jacket.
I wasn't a fan of gillets but the weather at the moments makes them essential imo.0 -
Thanks Chris - I had been wondering about a trip down the LBS to buy armwarmers and gilet. That kind of confirms it for me!0

The gillet is good for the decents so I owuld be taking one whatever the weather. They also look a bit better than th south wales echo stuck up your back and down your chest [:D]

There's a gilet (a tasteful fluoro green number) and a spare tube somewhere between Penrhys and the top of the Rhigos. They fell out of my pocket on Sunday and despite going down to the traffic lights in Treorchy and back up I couldn't find them [V]
Does anyone know if the little climb from Bryncethin over to Parc Prison is on the route this year? For some reason I've always had cramp on this climb in past dragon rides.
(I'm aiming for a sub 7 hour ride)

Coming from the mountain region of the Herts, Essex, Cambs borders I'll be happy with just getting round before they shut up shop at 8pm.
The only pressue I'm under is to put in a better time than a club mate who's riding. He's 23 years older than me at 67.0 -
He'll still beat me round I bet !!0
