If you can do 16mph up a hill then it isn't a hill, it's a slight slope.

Hey Chris, get him on some of your local rides! [:p]

Or how about a nice trip to Yorkshire... [:o)]

Joking aside, what do you term as a hill Kogan?

1:8 climb sort of thing constitutes a hill

16mph up a 12% gradient is not really sustainable over anything more than a very short sprint in my experience. I take it we are talking a 100m click and mothing longer

You need to be racing at Pro level mate. Seriously. You'd probably win Tour of Flanders for a start.

So going over a speed bump is a hill then?[:)]

You're having a larf, if you do 16mph over a 1 in 8 hill then...

Mind I didn't believe that people could manage 20mph av. speed on training runs then I was flooded with replies of I can, I can, I can, so what do I know.

In the races I have been in, for really steep hills they generally go from 5 to 7 mph, then for normal hills 7mph to 14mph, for drags from 14mph to about 20mph, but not average of 16mph os 1:8, only if its about 200m [:D]

Even a really skinny (63kg/140lb) strong 2nd cat racer would struggle to hold 16mph much beyond 15-20secs. In terms of power you're talking an average of roughly 750watts for the duration[:)]

• Kogan, you need to consider the amount of time you're maintaining an intensity in order to quantify it.
IOW, how long are you able to hold 16mph on a 1:8 grade climb for?

Rodborough Hill from Stroud to Rodborough Comon in Gloucestershire would be a useful test. About a mile long and 12%. I would happily donate œ50 to the charity of your choice if you could maintain 16mph up it.

ok this 1:8 is about 30 seconds at the end of a 3 min hill. usually i try and keep in the saddle and spin up and at the start of the hill for the first few hundred metres i try and keep to about 18mph and then the 1:8 starts and generally i dont drop below 23km/h (about 14mph) so ok not usually 16mph.

Daniel - I still think your climbing is excellent given your additional information. As a bit of context, I am a reasonable 3rd cat, weigh around 11st 6, 5'9. On a training ride today i rode part of a really steep climb as follows:

I do ok in hilly races and usually finish top 5 in hill climbs at the end of the year. The average power of 460 watts for context, my threshold is around 340 watts.

Duration: 1:00
Work: 28 kJ
TSS: 3.3 (intensity factor 1.413)

Distance: 820 ft
Elevation Gain: 92 ft
Elevation Loss: 0 ft
Grade: 12.3 % (101 ft)
Min Max Avg
Power: 392 526 460 watts
Speed: 7.9 11.2 9.3 mph
Pace 5:22 7:36 6:25 min/mi
Altitude: 11 103 57 ft

cheers Ben, climbing is my strong point (hopefully it should help me in the junior tour of wales) i hope to do the national hill climb champs at the end of the year as well.

how do you conduct a maximum threshold test?

Daniel,
the way I did it was to follow Hunter Allan's protocol available at cyclepeaks.com.

Basically it involve a longish warm up with a couple of 5 min maximal efforts. Then you had to beast yourself as hard as you can for 20 minutes. Your average wattage for this period minus a samll percentage is deemed to be your functional threshold power that you can hold for an hour.
It is a pretty good test and when I am in France doing some of the long climbs it is a good way to pace yourself. Similarly useful for testers i guess to pace themself over a TT.

Info available here: you might find it intersting Daniel. Are you riding for Gelndene this year?

hi Ben

Cheers for that. yes i am in the glendene junior squad this year but results have been a bit thin with only one good national performance so far. hopefully the next few nationals will be better.

thanks

• Kogan you're lucky not to have riden the junior crit on Saturday in Curborough. It was a stupidly technical course with constant crashes! cos of oil and rain all over the circuit. I didn't finish along with half of the field!
Will be seeing you at the Junior tour of Wales (challenging you in the mountains :D )

I have one of those VDO cycle computers which measures altitude and gradient. I aim to keep my speed in km/h plus gradient, as a %, above 20. Probably not too challenging for some of you guys, but keeps me focused on the long drags with gradients in the teens we have around here.

i thought the deal with hills was to change down to compensate for the invcline that would slow you down - if you could [?]
