Flat 10 Mile TT Courses Around Derby Area

I would like to have a go at a TT for the first time this summer, but would first like to have a practice on a course to see what time I could realistically do. Does anyone know any flat 10 Mile TT courses in and around the Derby area?

I currently have found 2 on the internet but that's about it:-

Long Lane: A 10 Mile circuit (road surface not too great)

Etwall-Foston: A 10 Mile route using the A50 (not an out and back route)

I could of course make my own route up, but I usually find I get disrupted by traffic lights etc. which is why I would like to use a course used for an event and go there early one morning when there is little traffic around to have a go at my own 10 TT.

Thanks

Theres an old 10 course that starts Kilburn toll bar and goes up the palm court island on the A38.
Start. End of the layby Derby side of Kilburn Toll Bar B6179.
Turn. Right onto the A38 at Little Eaton.
Turn. A6 A38 Island and back onto the A38.
Turn. Left back onto the B6179
Finish. About a 100 yrds before the start next to the footpath sign.
There is a pedestrian crossing in Little Eaton but chances are you will get through without stopping.

andyB the CTT site does not show all course details only a selected few for some reason but it's a good resource all the same and has quite a good section for introducing newbies to TTing.

Thanks e999sam for the course detailed above. Out of interest which local clubs used that course Derby Mercury or Heanor Clarion?

I find the island at the bottom Abbey Hill on the A38 and the A38 on that section quite busy but I will make a note of the route all the same.

Derby Mercury also have the Windley hilly course which is about 12.5 miles for a circuit

The Mercury mainly use Long Lane which is about 12.5mls and sometimes use Windley which is a touch over 10. You can come along any Tue to have a go but you must be a member of a CTT affiliated club or you can join the Mercury. If you want to have a trial run then on a typical Tue on LL the times will vary between 29 mins and 38 mins.

It was used by Heanor Clarion but I don't think they have used it for a few years.

I ride on the West Leake couse, south of Derby (not far from Kegworth) on Wednesday nights

2 laps of a 5.4 mile circuit around quiet country lanes

clc2005 - join us in the Derby Merc - the best œ8 you'll ever spend! If you want someone to show you the Windley or Long Lane courses - or just clarify the starting/finishing points let me know.

On the A38 course it sounds quick but you can get held up badly getting onto and off the A38 and whilst you may not get held at the crossing in Long Eaton it's common for cars to stop to let people in or out of the shops.

The Sutton Bonnington course the Long Eaton CC used pre VCLE was good - I'm not sure if they are using that at the moment but it's a measured 10, rolling at most and you wont get held up on it - you really need someone to show you the finish though as it's not obvious.

    Hi Tom

I've always considered the Derby Mercury being a Derby lad so maybe it's time to bite the bullet and join. Out of interest what rides does the club organise (day of week, length, pace etc.)? The reason I ask is that I've always worried about getting dropped if riding in a group/club. At the moment when riding on my own on the flat I can hold an average of around 19.5mph over one hour this drops to about 18mph for a 3 hour ride and around 17mph with some hills thrown in. TTing is another aspect of cycling that I've only recently started to consider.

A lot of the rides members go on are mixed club chain gangs and stuff but the Merc Sunday club run is 9am at Palm Court, about 60-80 miles and you'd probably be OK on it - certainly you'd be OK to try it but expect a hard day. The TT is Tuesday at 6.40 Darley ABbey church hall (the big church). The other main one I do is the faster Saturday bash - there is a possibility of getting dropped on that but it happens to most of us at times and nobody thinks any worse of you.

If you email me I'll fill you in with a fuller list of rides people go on - there's a fair few members of different abilities who do ride together but a lot of it is informal.

I was thinking about joining Derby Mercury as well I was a member of Beauvale cc up to about 15 years ago but they don't seem to be doing much these days.

clc2005 Don't be scared of getting dropped. One of the best ways of getting fitter is to ride with a group of riders that are better than you.

e999 - we've got a couple of ex-Beauvale in the club - Phil Allison and Matt Crouch - I think they rode for Beauvale as juniors about 10-12 years ago and have recently got back into cycling.

Totally agree about getting dropped - I've known a few people who drifted away from cycling because they were worried about getting dropped on chain gangs - first time out I lasted from Broadway to the Palm Court - less than a mile. Seeing as I live near the Broadway I was out and home within 10 minutes - still I had time to do get the grass cut and the shopping done.

cheers for all the good info regarding the local clubs and TT courses etc which has been helpful for someone like me wanting to join a club but who has not quite got the bottle for one reason or another. Looks like I'll be joining Derby Mercury in the next month or so.
