I did 50 miles the other day, took 3 hours 10 mins. Took 4 x 750 ml bottles of lucosade sport. (warm day).

after 7 miles, i had used a bottle

Does 4 750 ml bottles in 3 hour mean im over hydrating too or is this about normal?

If I drank that much I would be stopping for a pee every 5 miles.

2 weeks ago I did a 50 in 3:05 and used 1 750m bottle. On rides of up to 15m I don't bother to carry water at all and 15-25 only gets a 500ml bottle!! I simply wouldn't remember to drink what all you lot seem to shift!!!

• I've just come in from three very hot and hilly hours on half a 500m bottle, and there is still some left.

If you are struggling to find somewhere to put bottles you could use a triathlon type cage that carries two behind the saddle.

Finished the drink off 3 miles from my finishing point and i didn't need the toilet (well i did about 30 mins "after" i finished). Point is i didn't get a headache from dehydration, i could keep going until the last few miles which total'd me.

I guess im not far off you, proably about 1 1/3 bottles per hour, altrhough admittingly after 7 miles, i had used a bottle, I probably drank a little too quick to start off with.

I wouldn't worry too much over this. We are all different. There is no definitive hydration rate just a recommended rate for folk. SOme folk won't find that it's enough by a long chalk. SOme folk will find it over the top. There are too many variables to determine a one size fits all quantity even for an individual.

I can get through anything between 1 and 6.5 litres on a 100km ride. It all depends how hydrated I am before the ride. The ambient temperature, the amount of wind, the level of cloud cove, the lumpiness of the terrain and the average speed of the ride not to mention one's metabolic rate.

I always cary 3 or 4 750 ml bottles with me this time of the year. 4 x 750 = 1 ltr per hour over 3 hours, sounds about right, but some of the guys I ride with manage with only 500ml bottle on the 3hours.

Just finished the short Highclere UCI - Covering 79 miles (got lost again - about 3 miles from the finish [:I]) and 4,500ft c.24-28C temp. c5 hours....
Before starting 1x bottle of water and two bananas
1x bottle of Nuun
1x bottle of Hi-Five at a feed station.
2x water bottles.

On finish: 1x hot coffee - that cooled me down!
Got home and sank a pint of water!

There was a guy with 2x tri-cages mounted behind the saddle.
I have a bag that hangs off a belt behind me (KF Explorer) with 2x bottle holders on it. rarely use it though - the weight is rather annoying and I usually find a topping up spot.

Sorry, the thing about cold drinks and hot bodies is bollocks. It was an old myth that used to be peddled by some 'hard men of racing' types back in the 60s, who advocated hot tea. Those who raced then and are now involved in training using modern knowledge and techniques laugh about it now.

As some are saying, hydration does vary. But I generally find that, if start very well hydrated, I need two 800 mil bottles of a carbo solution for a 100 miler in mild weather. I would assume that I would refill both bottles for a British summer sportive. Anything an hour or less, I wouldn't bother carrying any liquid, just drink before and after. That's just me though...

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety

Now I guess I'll have to tell 'em
That I got no cerebellum

Interesting - I only recently realised this thing about optimum body temperature, and athletes diving into baths of ice to cool down!
Time for a cold shower before I put a record lawn-mowing time in - Actually, not a bad thing, having spent the last 5 hours chasing lycra clad lovelies (girls, I hasten to add, not that I wish to introduce gender stereotyping to this forum). [:D]
