What do folks do about cycling when its starts getting hotter. Its baking here today and not a breath of wind. Whats the best time of day? Also how do you carry enough fluid on longer rides? I've got twin water bottles (drinking home made pre-mix) on my bike and that lasts just over an hour of riding......i am thinking of dropping some in ditches to pick up as i go round.

I just buy water on the way round (Petrol station or a local shop). A œ5 cable lock should stop the opportunistic thief taking your bike when you spend 30 seconds in a shop.

Carry some pre-mix in the sealable plastic baggies if you want more later on in the ride.

Cotton cycling caps help too (whether you wear a plastic hat or not). When they get soaked in sweat they keep your head cool. The little peak also means the sweat drips down away from you instead of streaming into your eyes.

Whatever you do, don't ever put suncream on your forehead. It just runs down into your eyes and stings like twelve stinging things.

The cap also keeps the sun off your head which can contribute to sunstroke or (if male pattern baldness has taken a grip) even sunburn.

  • Yikes! You shouldn't be drinking that much in an hour.

Early mornings are a lot cooler

If your taking two bottles on a long ride, you could try freezing one and drinking it once the Normal one has run out, that should keep it cooler,
Although I barely need that much fluid as I load up on the fluids all during the week. Try drinking more out of the saddle as well as in it

Are they 500ml bottles? Thats better if they are.
Get some bigger bottles, two 750's should be plenty for several hours of hard riding

Early morning rides are the way to go, and 800ml bottles (the SiS ones are good).

  • 2 bottles in 1 hour is alot, drink little and often to prevent dehydration, when you get the dry mouth your already dehydrated.

The amount of fluid consumed can vary with body size, work rate and weather. My consumption on 100k Adaxes varies between 1.5 litres and 6.5 litres.

I use a Camelback Mule with a 3litre bladder. When I do ned to top it up I use bottled water from local shops/garages that I encounter on the rides.
  • Drink only when you begin to feel thirsty. People nowdays over-hydrate, and athletes have even died from it. Sports scientists now appear to be doubting the view that has been prevelant for the last decade or so that you should load up with fluid at regular intervals whether you want it or not.

In the sixties you were considered a girls blouse if you took a bottle on a club run, no matter how hot it was. The view held then that you should train your body to do without fluids has since been proved wrong, but those of us who did it are still here, so although it was uncomfortable it can't have been fatal. I always carry a bottle now if I am out for over two hours, but over doing it only makes you feel bloated and you keep having to stop behind a tree.

Nobody ever got laid because they were using Shimano

You should put electrolytes in your drinks, not just water - it also means you won't dehydrate as much and aim for 500ml-1 litre per hour. If you need to keep stopping for a wizz, you're drinking too much and if it's distinctly yellow, then you're getting dehydrated. Drinking too much water can cause hyperhydration with fatal consequences! Don't just drink when thirstly - you'll dehydrate, but aim to take a few mouthfuls every 10-15 minutes. For longer rides, top-up with bottled water and carry extra electrolyte powder with you.

Righty well my bottles are 750mls and I fill them with half water half OJ and a pinch of salt. Tonight I cycled for 75mins and drank just over one and half bottles. I also have a pint of weak water/oj about half an hour before i set off. I am not forcing the liquid down, just having a little and often but more importantly I do feel thirsty when I am cycling. Oh and I don't normally need to pee. I also find that if i don't keep well hydrated i get really bad headaches after cycling........

My "treat" is a Coolmax "Buff"

In the morning I soak it in water and then insert into a plastic bag and put in the fridge at work.....

On the way home unpack and put on - wonderfully cooling.

    I love the heat...40 miles last year in 32 degrees..lovely [:p]
I tend to take on some fluids pre ride, take two large bottles with me, and maybe buy a 500ml of Lucozade on the way.

Sips all the way works for me.
I also try to make sure i'm hydrated ALL the time, not just on the morning of a ride. Taking on water at that points probably already too late.

Refrigerating a normal bottle in the real heat wont make much, if any difference. I FROZE my bottles last year when it was REALLY hot...within 10 miles they were warm[xx(]

Felix is right.... if you get dry lips then you are de-hydrated. Sip a little and often.

    But don't over do it.....

2 bottles (i.e. 1 litre) should see you through 50 hilly miles in heat if using a hydration drink (easily).

I generally consume upto 500ml in 25 miles, usually water - if it's a longer ride, then proper fuel is used.

If you use Camelbak, or similar then fill with Ice as opposed to water. Won't last ALL day, but you have cool drinks fo the morning at least.

If you wait till your dehydrated you've left it too late, I take on lots of fluid about an hour and a half to two hours before (this way im hydrated and can go to the loo before I set off) then I have about 500ml of fluid 15mins before a set off. Then when I'm cycling I drink every 20mins to beat of any feelings of dehydration-also any time between these 20mins if I feel I need it.

I'm lucky I can stand the heat but if you can't avoid going out in the hours of 11-14:00 these are the hottest of the day.

Good luck this summer and be careful.

P.S don't forget your suncream and a hat!

Handy lightweight tablets - electrolytes and no carbs.
I have 1 bottle that contains Nuun and 1 for plain water.
    The electrolytes get drunk first.
I get my carbs from bananas and bonk bars (Torq and Clif).

I was recommended: 1 bottle per 30 miles and sip it every 10 minutes.

I agree with drinking enough water before setting out too.
In fact, to negate a hangover/dehydration due to stomach bug etc. on ride-day, I drink some electrolytes before setting out.

Oh great - forum spam invasion - We have recently have had an edict at work that we are to delete any email that even looks as if it could be spam - so I always send my boss bad news with the subject "Free Meds" [:D]

Just opened the post - Cycling Plus - It's another bumper month...
    There's an article on hydration!

Plus there's a Surrey Hills ride that's near identical to the one I mailed in a week or so ago! Great news as it's a bit of a variation down a few roads I hadn't considered.

I did 50 miles the other day, took 3 hours 10 mins. Took 4 x 750 ml bottles of lucosade sport. (warm day). Finished the drink off 3 miles from my finishing point and i didn't need the toilet (well i did about 30 mins "after" i finished). Point is i didn't get a headache from dehydration, i could keep going until the last few miles which total'd me.

I guess im not far off you, proably about 1 1/3 bottles per hour, altrhough admittingly after 7 miles, i had used a bottle, I probably drank a little too quick to start off with.

Does 4 750 ml bottles in 3 hour mean im over hydrating too or is this about normal?

You are right but do you know why? When a cold drink enters your body, the brain registers a sharp drop in temperature and then your cooling system shuts down to retain the heat. On the other hand, something hot has the opposite effect, cooling system works overtime to get your temperature down. Try it on your next run, instead of having that nice, ice-cold Pepsi, try a nice cup of tea and you'll feel much better!
I've just come back from my short circuit about one hour ago, temperature about 95F (35C), nice cup of tea, shower and now feeling great.
