Extract from "Is he mad? No, he's English!" - The account of my ride across Saudi Arabia:-
Lunch was over and was now time to take our leave and continue our trip. Riyadh is built on a hill and it is now time to ride down the escarpment [We rode a few small hills in the morning-if my memory serves me right they were nothing spectacular] but now we had to ride the roller coaster of three steep rises and falls. The start of the roller coaster indicated a 7% descent, I prefer to have my hills marked '1 in 8' and can't tell you how steep 7% is! Cycling is all about reward and punishment. After a 'punishing' mornings ride we were about to get our 'reward'; 6 kilometres of sheer exhilaration with speeds of over 80kph [Top speed on the third escarpment was about 66 mph but I think it sounds better if I say about 110 kph!]: straight down from the top through steep cliffs on either side with motorists looking on in sheer amazement. We stopped at the foot of the [last] escarpment for a rest and to have photos taken, both of us wanted to do it again but reason and sanity prevailed! With the roller coaster over, it was time for heads down, tails up and go!

"I will definitely try and get over the 40 mark! Not sure of the gearing on my hybrid, though it wont be easy. I'm not very aerodynamic either. I take it proper road bikes are easier to hit higher speeds due to the gearing and weight."
All about your position i think. I have a dawes gyro 300 road bike, and i managed to get 38.5 mph on a downhill. Never got 40 yet, atlrhoguh i want to try a new position which may accomplish this for me
Once you reach 30-35, tuck your legs in, pedals level, head down almost touching handle bars (I personally dont "touch" the handlebars with my head incase i hit a pot hole lol... and if possible get off the seat and down onto the bars. Aerodynamics should take over from there.

If you did 35 for a few miles on the flat it must be kph, either that or your in the tdf?

I've managed 35, on the flat...no assistance from a decline though. Without a headwind I managed to keep it up for a couple of miles (last time only managed half a mile)

Shattered my record going into Halifax on my ahem "flat barred racer" and hit 41.3mph. It was ace, I caught up with the bus and could have rolled into the town centre if it wasn't for the bloomin traffic lights. Still good fun though

For those doing the longer dragon route, there is a decent in the extra loop in the Beacons (near defynnog) 25% and dead straight so guarenteed to go well over 40mph. I hit just over 50mph on a windy day in early May. not sure how fast it would be with a tail wind [:D]

I get a rush just topping 30, especially if that means riding at the same speed as some of the traffic.

Yeah it's annoying when you sit in the primary position, doing 30 in a 30 zome (or 40 in a 40 zone [:D]) and they try to overtake you!

I clocked my fastest ever speed on a flat......41 mph !!!
This was on Sunday morning, on Lea Bridge Road (for those in the East End), dressed in a casual shirt & climbing trousers....... and of course, slipstreaming an 18 wheeler (foreign plates).
What....you didn't think I could go that fast without any help did you?

I've done 55mph on my mountain bike (off-road) and 49mph on my road bike. The best advice I can offer if you're trying to go faster, is to pedal like mad!

I've hit 40mph+ coming down a short hill out of Elsfield near Oxford and always go for 30mph+ at the speed camera on the Banbury Road into Oxford. I think the unaerodynamic grin on my face prevents me going faster [:D]0

Down the other side of Ditchling Beacon during the L2B I saw 45.5mph on my etrex gps unit. This was the first major hill on the Allez.
What a buzz, scary as hell but good fun.
