I went around some roads near the A10 today. Really bad roads and stiff bike = numb nuts and hands. But smooth roads on a stiff bike = cycling paradise!

Does anybody know any nice 50 or 100 mile routes with nice tarmac?

Thanks.

From my (limited) experience, UK roads are about 90% bloody awful, 10% OK and 10% smooth.

In London, I'm pleasantly surprised if I can find a 100m stretch of smooth tarmac. Westminster roads are waaaaay smoother than any other boroughs, but that is offset by the ridiculous amount of traffic.

I'm depressed when I think of the roads I've seen on my travels in Germany and Switzerland - smooth, clean and an abscence of manhole covers. Even France has better roads. It's not rocket science, so why can't the UK authorities get it right?

Forget I asked that question. I often wonder how anything works in this ****hole of a country.

I'd agree that the best road surfaces are in westminster, they resurface them quite often.

Regent's Park is pretty smooth, the outer circle.......

They've just been resurfacing the A41 around Mill Hill......

  • Around london as it outside the M25...
  • London's rubbish, so is Surrey where I do most of my riding.

I did the Hampshire Hilly Hundred, which is doable if you drive from london and the roads around there are fantastic in comparison.
