Come on then Ruth, did you do anything special between the National 10 and 25?
Very well done by the way.[8D][^][^]

Yeah, well done Ruth - congratz.
Must say though, that Julia Shaw looks like a tough cookie to catch.

Well done Ruth. Agree with Andy Julia Shaw looks in good form.

Thanks guys. It was pretty close in the battle for medals behind Julia, so I was very pleased to get the silver. It wouldn't have taken much more than a hold-up at a RAB to end up with a wholly different result. An excellent, consistent performance by Julia yet again.

Are you asking what makes the difference between 5th place and 2nd place? Not much. Different distance, different course, different day........ different result.0 -

I was just kind of wondering if you were happy with your 5th place and if you weren't happy did you do anything special in between to move up the leaderboard. Or was your move up due to the xtra distance of the race? (Or I suppose, I haven't looked, different competitors.)0 -
I couldn't imagine being exactly 'happy' with a non-podium place when I've been 4th over that distance in the past - but I was satisfied that I did as good a ride as I could reasonably hope for in the 10.
Two of the women who beat me in the 10 weren't taking part in the 25, but I beat one in the 25 who beat me in the 10.
I don't honestly think there's a great deal you can do to improve in 2 weeks, if you've made no obvious errors in pre-race preparation which you can correct. The foundations for the form are laid long before the run of championship events gets under way. It's a question of being sensible, doing a bit of endurance work, a bit of speed work and trying to arrive at the next championship feeling fresh and ready to give it your all once again. Interestingly I didn't race in between the 2 championships....... take from that what you will.
It's been noted more than once that I go better over longer distances - though whether this is due to innate stamina or simply my training/riding history, I'm not sure. I suppose I may never know the answer to that one.0 -
Well done Ruth. Let's hope it's gold in one of the longer championships later in the year!
Personally I think your ability to do better in longer distances is due to chasing me up all those big cols over the years. [;)]0 -
LOL! Thanks Andy. Don't forget there were one or two when I was in front of you rather than behind. [;)]
You might be interested that I saw both Colin and Ken, the soigneurs from the 2002 TdF trip, at the National 25........ both on good form and it was wonderful to see them.0 -

Glad to hear Colin and Ken are well. Ken must be getting on a bit these days.0 -
Firstly, big congratulations Ruth.

One of them is in my club, and will continue to beat me by miles in every single time trial I ever enter! She's lovely though.0 -
Thanks, Claire. It's a shame Corin didn't ride the 25 too then. Any idea why she didn't?0

I'm not sure Corin's ever ridden a 25, though she's doing an Open 50 next weekend (which I wimped out of completely!) and she does very well in our club hilly, which is about 23 miles. She only started racing last year, at the same time as me, and very quickly put me to shame. I did go faster than her at the Blenheim Triathlon on Saturday though, which absolutely made my day (and put months of training with the sole aim of beating Corin just once at something worth it!).
