Have to agree with SSS. Organisation on a par with the White Rose Classic. Still can't decide which was hardest. Like the WRC the RR had a some nasty little climbs, noteably the White Horse Bank (after 111km) and a nasty little climb out of Riveaux (sadistic and unecessary [:)]).

I also did the 131km route (God help the mad sods who did the 180km option). Managed a respectable 5:17:20 (although I was pretty much destroyed after this).

This was a fantastic event and I'd recommend it to anybody who enjoys a hard sportive; I'll definately be back next year.
  • Yeh sounds like me, especially if I looked knackered [:D] I completely forgot about the hill actually getting back into the park, haha. It didn't seem that steep when I drove up it in the car!

That final climb out of Riveaux certainly was evil, but the descent into Helmsley was well worth it! I saw Duncombe Park in the distance and went for it 35+ mph all the way in was great.

Definitely gonna sign up for this again next year!

That climb out of Rievaulx always gets me. I have been up a few times but it always seems longer than I remember for some reason. Hope to be back next year too.
  • I didn't end up travelling down for this event, but it sounds like the RR will quickly become another "must-do" UK sportive. I'm going to put the 180km route at the top of my list for 2008.

Having ridden 70 miles today in lack-lustre form, I'm actually glad I didn't tackle the RR.

Hope you all had a good day!

I did 150k Ron Kitching, though I wish I was on the RR. Having riden WRC two weeks before the difference in organisation between the two events was startling! Ho hum!
Anyway the routes coincided around Farndale and had pleasure of riding with a few RRs there (who caught and dropped me) but then my smile came back when I caught some of my local club climbing Blakey.
Was really fed up when I got to Danby to see "5kms to feed station sign for RR" and ours wasn't until Marton another 40kms away!
Passed loads going opposite way towards Rosedale Chimney in rain....I wonder if they got up without chains on wheels, when wet there, wheelspin is a problem!

Needless to say will be on RR next year.

We were caught at White Horse by a guy on the long ride. He said Limber Hill had been "interesting" due to lack of traction, and he had fallen off on The Chimney due to wheel spin.

It seems that having the RK and The Rumble on the same route caused a bit of confusion, mainly to the RK riders who were following the Rumble signs!

Was taking to some of the organisers and they said they were thinking of moving The Rumble to later on in the year to avoid the York Rally and spread the North Eastern Sportives out a bit.

A change in date to early August would be great as I really don't want to miss the GYBR next year and I can't do both, too many rides not enough free dates !

  • Anyone know when pics will be up? There was a chap (driving around in a decorators van) taking photos at the top of the climb out of Church Houses who caught me and my dad going up it.

My dad said it was raining, and that he was crying at the time. Naturally, his friends need to see it [:D]

Booboo, Thanks for an excellent event. My wife and I did the short course as we had some commitments in the afternoon and were pleasantly pleased to achieve gold. I rode the WRC in 06 and this achieved similar standards in the organisation and execution. Blakey Ridge was quite a hill. Anyway, thanks we both enjoyed the course. But, the weather - well that was fun, but at least the rain was not cold.

Edit: Just checked the piccies and was impressed that I even managed a smile as I hit the top of the ridge. I clearly was not trying hard enough[:)]. Me - last 3 pics on page 15. My wife - page 16 2nd row, 2nd - 6th pic
  • Great pics! [:D]

Couple of me on page 22, 2nd picture in on the second row down.

What fantastic pictures! I'm on page 15, second row, red Campag top. My mate is in the couple of pics before me in the blue Italia top.
  • I wasn't even doing the Rumble (I did the Ron Kitching 150km), but I'm there - page 14, 3rd row, red bike, Kelme jersey. Quite a few other RK riders are there too!

Gavin - I think thanks are in order. I do believe I got a free tow from you from when we crossed the A170 and headed through Marton. I had a blue waterproof on and my mate had a yellow one one. He came through to do a turn but shot off the front as we showed our experience of group riding! Obviously I would have done a turn but you looked like you were enjoying yourself [;)]....... or maybe I was knackered just trying to hang on? The rain was kind of interesting for that bit of the ride.

I was enjoying myself despite the weather. Unfortunately, my wife got a slow puncture just as you guys came through for a spell on the front. She did not realise it initially and just presumed that she was knackered and suffering from the pace. We slowed and let you guys push on. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the ride.

You were certainly motoring on the bit near Marton. We wondered what had happened to you, would have stooped to give you a hand if we had realised. Can't have been much fun changing a tube in that weather. We had a great ride and managed to get round p*******e free some how.

Nice pair of bikes you and your wife have between you.

Think this should be a complete sell out next year...think that many people(including me) had already entered other sprtifs before this one became available...next year this will be a must...it'll be one of the very best out...

just testing this new mad forum...didn't know you had to add cp to the end of my username...crazy!...didn't even know the C+ forum was moving until no entries went in since the 4th....

Anyway...speaking with the Organiser of the Ryedale Rumble..next year(maybe 3rd August)he's maybe switching the climb of White Horse Bank to Boltby Bank  This would be superb...Boltby's one of the hardest climbs in the Uk i've did....its way way harder than White Horse bank....unlike last year Boltby Bank would be the first big climb of the day...the last will be the *Chimney*...oh dear lord.... after the trauma of Boltby bank the route may end up going through Hawnby...then down/up the little 30% heading for Newgate bank....excellent!..

This would mean that the route would have the climbs in order Boltby bank, Blakey Bank, Limber Hill, Rosedale Chimney...and thats not taking into account tons of 20%+ bits in between....ultimate Challenge!.....

Botlbys on a par with Rosedale/Chimney/Park rash etc so you know what to expect..me and a good few mates are doing this next year...hope to see lots of my fellow pain seeking C+ers there...trust me this Sportif is a must! especially since its the Same Guys who run the very well appreciated White Rose Classic.

    Harder than the White Horse?!

    Good lord.

Yes Luke...and not just a bit harder...a whole lot harder!

I did a route in April which took in White Horse Bank then went down Sutton Bank and headed for Boltby....I had been told with guys on this forum that Boltby Bank(AKA Sneck Yate Bank) was a real candidate for toughest climb in the NY Moors..everybit as tough as the Chimney....lots of the guys had failed on this...however my recollection was after the ascent of White Horse - 'pretty steep at bits but plenty places to rest'...even managed to get down the gears at a few places...so all in all pretty tame by Moors Standards...then I headed for Boltby! When I first clapped eyes on it(as you can see the entire climb straight away) I was very concerned..it looked more like 30% nearing the top..I thought that I could save a gear until about 3rd of the way up...no chance! I was bottomed out straight away...and it just got steeper and steeper to a point about 2/3rds way up where I couldn't sit down as the front wheel lifted, started to really worry if I had it in me to get up it but with a humugas effort I tipped over the top...by far the toughest 1km climb ive ever did...every bit as difficult as the Chimney IMO!...only ever felt those doubting feelings on 4 other climbs in the UK and I've been up some brutes....

By the looks of next years Rumble, Boltby Bank would be the 1st climb after around 15miles warming up...and I honestly reckon half the sportif will end up walking even with fresh legs...I use a 30x27 and I was pedalling square on this....after this nighmare climb we may have the small 30% climb out fo Hawnby etc...and I forgot...Blakey Bank/Limber Hill and the Chimney!.....and all the other 20%+ parts in bewteen.

I think this Sportif is one of those 'must do' ones along with the FWC etc...it takes in some legendary ascents and is in such a challenging beautiful area...the roads are so quiet and well surfaced...I cant wait until next August 3rd....

To ride Boltby, look to your left and count the fence posts! Do NOT look in front, and just treat it as a slow bike race, Job Done :D
