what is the camping situation like on Arran? I suppose there are a few decent sites, and does the ferry to kintyre take cars because I was thinking of "passing through" and heading up the west coast. One last question; clockwise or anti

    Answers to yours questions;

Campsites - OK ones at Lamlash and Lochranza
Ferry to Kintyre - yes it takes cars.

    Hi Guys
Been off the forum for a wee while now. Just noticed this
If you don't mind an ageing, slow lump I wouldn't mind tagging along. Might motivate me to getting out more than I have in preperation
So put me down as a def and I'll see you at the ferry.

Murpheus/Tunny/Gazmo - its still on for the 22nd July. Ferry is at 9.45 from Ardrossan so I plan to be there just after 9. I'm going to post some more details a couple of days before the ride.

Pipeman - there is a secure carpark at the Ardrossan ferry terminal which costs œ2 per day

    Hi hilltop,

If we do a figure of 8 the mileage will be just short of 80 or a plain circuit of the island is 55. You're more than welcome to join us.

I'm going to Arran tomorrow for a quick recce. My dad tells me a couple of bits of road are being resurfaced so I'll check that out tomorrow and report my findings early next week

How'd the trip to Arran go arranandy?

Having never been to Ardrossan before, I take it you can drive straight up to the pier and park for the Ferry?

Edit: From the overhead it looks like you can

Aido, my recce trip to Arran went fine. Resurfacing work on a couple of bits of road has finished. Still the occasional pothole and rough sections down the south end of the island.

As for parking at Ardrossan the carpark is on the left as you come down to the harbour - it is sign-posted though. £2 for the day. I plan to be there the back of 9 so hopefully I'll see you (and a few more others) there. All we need now is the weather gods to be kind to us

    Hi all,

Just to confirm that this is still on for Sunday 22nd. Weather forecast looks OK at the moment.

I plan to be at Ardrossan for about 9am for the ferry at 9.45. This gives plenty of time to get the car parked and get a ferry ticket. The ferry is approx £10 return and the car park is £2 for the day. Once on Arran I plan to do an anti-clockwise circuit of the island - 55 miles - as I am going to visit my parents briefly then get the 4.40pm ferry back. However if any of you want to do a figure of 8 - approx 80 miles - and get the 7.20 ferry back then that's fine by me.

Hope to see some of you on Sunday and put faces to names

    Regards,

    Andy

PS - I'll be riding a blue and white Bianchi and probably wearing black kit

  • First Bikeradar post since we came over here, lets hope it goes ok and no over-reactions ;-)

Just reregistering my intention to be there. Coming up to parents on Saturday so see you Sunday at 9.

I'm quite up for the figure of 8 if others are. Andy, would you suggest going over the Ross as one part of the route...thereby making it more of a figure of Pacman character...

Which way would you suggest for the longer route?

    Thanks

    Hi tartanarmy,

A lot of the Ross has been resurfaced recently so my local sources tell me there is still a lot of loose chippings on the road.

As for a figure of 8 I would suggest leaving Brodick and heading anti-clockwise then over the String road from Blackwaterfoot to Brodick then doing the north end of the island clock before tackling the String road again before decending back down into Brodick.

    See you on Sunday

My apologies guy's but I'm going to have to call off.picked up an injury playing fives.
Looks a well organized ride Andy and you have kept us well informed.
    All the best for Sunday.
    Hilltop.
  • I think I'll come along too, as long as it seems like a nice enough day for it on Sunday - add me to the list anyway.

Never been to Arran before, so what better way to see it than by bike!

I would be up for doing the figure of 8 circuit but I'll just go with whatever the general consensus is.

    See you all Sunday!

  • Hi, Andy, I hope to join the group on Sunday, thanks for organising it, I intend to do the 80 mile circuit if weather and legs permit, I hope others do too. I enjoyed the Fife ride in January, hopefully not quite so cold. See you all on Sunday, I'm coming across at an early hour from Brechin, if anyone wants a lift, let me know. See you on Sunday back of 9ish?

    Sorry!!
I really wanted to do this ride...
Maybe we can organise another in late summer (August/September) time?
Promise not to drop out of the next one...
Apologies again: I hate dropping out of stuff, especially at the last minute.
