Hey Steve, if you would like any help/advice with planning that leg I'd be pleased to see what I could do - I love messing about with maps and trying to work out routes. I know the area well and my Memory Map software has seamless OS map coverage of the entire country at 1:50,000. Email me if you are interested.

Thanks Colin. I have the route on tracklogs, but I doubt it would be compatible with your memory map. I will do the part of the route I am worried about on Gmap and send you a link. If you could look at it and give some suggestions, I would appreciate it.

If Tracklogs has a 'save as GPX' option I'd be okay with that, if not I'll have a look on GMap.

Oops - that's a bit of an oversight on our part [:I]! Still, it was the only weekend when Blonde, mrushton, Warburton and I were all free so we didn't have much choice really.

See you on the next one perhaps [:)]!

  • After protracted and sometimes difficult negotiations in the 46213 household, I am happy to report that, much as I am rubbish at hills, I've got the all-clear to drag myself up them with the rest of you.
Will hopefully drive up from flatshire the night before.
see you there - its the same carpark as the MSeries ride isn't it?

This time I know better than to listen to Colin with his description of length or severity of hills. I will assume they are all BAD!

It will be nice to see you again John - I've moved your name to the 'Definite' list.

I'm never going to be forgiven for my "Don't worry, the remaining hills are only 2 minute grovels!" remark am I [;)]!

We'll not be seeing andy1 because he won't be picking up his new bike in time. No further word yet from Nickwill and andy_wrx. Would anybody else like to sign up for the ride?

UPDATE: I said in the ride description that parking at the start at Mytholmroyd community centre is free. It used to be, but I met Warburton there on Saturday and noticed that there is now an 'honesty box' by the entrance to the car park. A sign requests a small donation towards the cost of running the car park. So, ample cheap parking is available at the community centre.

Still hoping to be there. I work alternate Saturdays, so its a question of negotiating to have that Saturday off. As I've already had to make arrangements to be free on the days preceding the Fred Whitton and the White Rose Classic, I might be pushing it a bit. I will try to find out over the next week. I really want to do the ride and catch up with everyone!

UPDATE: I went over Cold Edge today, and discovered that the unmade road section mentioned in my route description has been sorted out. The potholes have been filled in, and tarmac applied. The road is still a bit rough in places, but at least you can now call it a road, rather than just a dirt track. Despite that, I still didn't see many cars up there.

I'm looking forward to the ride. Would anybody else like their name adding to the list?

I've never been on a Forum ride before, but I have a work do that Saturday at Holywell Green, which I see is only a few miles from the start. Usually I have to spend the Sunday morning slumped over the black pudding until I feel well enough to set off home, but a "bring up your breakfast on the handlebars" ride might give me an incentive not to stand at the bar until the beer is coming out of my bootlaces.

Er, the ride is on Saturday 23rd June, not Sunday 24th but you'd still be welcome to join us so I've added your name to the Definitely Maybe list! We should be back in Mytholmroyd about, say, 15:30, so you'd easily be able to get to Holywell Green by about 16:30, if that is any use to you?

You might be able to have a shower and change at the community centre sports hall before going off to your works do. Check with them on 01422 883023.

As for overdoing things on Saturday nights at the bar... I've had 3 mountain biking pals up for the weekend. We did a great 6 hour South Pennine MTB ride yesterday in glorious sunshine. Later on we went out for a Greek meal during which we drank 3 bottles of wine between the 4 of us, and then of course we adjourned to a pub... As a result, I felt somewhat jaded this morning [xx(]!

My work do is all day Saturday, I'm afraid. In the morning we're supposed to be doing Blue Sky Thinking, which on this evidence has come too late for me.

And ASC1951 takes this year's Shortest Time Spent on Ride List award... [:D]!

We do about 3 forum rides a year out of Mytholmroyd, so it won't be too long until there's another one. Actually, I haven't got anything planned for the end of July so I might organise another one then. Watch this space...

    Hi Colin,

The route looks great - I would like to join you all on the 23rd if that is OK.

I've recently moved to Todmorden and am still exploring the area so this ride would be perfect for me. Lots of new hills to try!

    Hi Phil.

That's fine - I've added your name to the list. It will be nice to meet you. You've certainly come to the right area for hills!

We did a similar ride last August and John Birkby has some photographs here. They were taken at the community centre in Mytholmroyd. As you can see, we're a pretty friendly lot [:)].

Count me as a Very Probable now.
I survived Polka Dot, my legs/bum even feel respectable this afternoon.
If it's absolutely p1$$1ing down, I'd rather not suffer it, but if it's sunny-through-to-damp, I'll be there Sunday.

why is it sunny all week yet rains at weekends ?

Sorry folks, I can't make it. My 50th is coming up in early July, and this next weekend is the only one when the whole of my immediate family is free to get together to celebrate/commiserate.

I was really looking forward to seeing everyone. Maybe we can arrange another ride before the Summer is out!

I'm thinking of organising a century ride for the second half of July which you might be interested in. I'll start a separate thread about it later.

John - the forecast is currently for a mixture of sun and drizzle here on Saturday. I think that only prolonged thunderstorms would be a problem. I'll check the forecast again at lunchtime on Friday and give you an update.

I did 'Pain in the Pennines' in these parts last Sunday and we had everything from drizzle through showers to brilliant sunshine. At times I got cold and wet, and at others a bit too warm. In the light of that experience, I'd recommend that you bring armwarmers, legwarmers, maybe overshoes, plus a gilet and or a windtop. That way you can decide at the start what to wear and add or remove clothing as appropriate.
