"I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to plan me a route (or two)?"
Out of Buxton on the A6 towards Bakewell.
Left to Tideswell.
Follow this through Tideswell, across the main road (A625?) and eventually to a T Junction with Hope and Castleton to your left.
Take this left and ride through Hope and the Castleton.
In Castleton go straight over the mini roundabout and start climbing. About 100 yards on, there is a left fork.
Take this fork and follow the road up, up and up ;-)
At the top, turn right and follow the road round. This will eventually take you to Chapel en le Frith.
Follow the signs for Whaley Bridge.
Arrive at a set of cross roads in Whaley Bridge and turn left towards Buxton.
Not sure how far it is (someone with better knowledge will tell me that's nowhere near 50 miles!), but it gives you Winnats and, at the end, Long Hill.0 -

Not sure when we will be up in Buxton, but a friend and me are probably going to be doing a ride from Cromford next sunday (10th),
I haven't ridden in the peaks before though so it might be slow!!!0 -
That is a route plan TomF ! - Go on Bikely (free to subscribe) and you can lay it out on the road map....I did it then forgot to save it for you but it was 52.5 KM in total.....

paul - I've only ever seen Bikely once before. That looks exactly as I see it in my mind's eye. Thanks v much for plotting & I hope it's of some use to others passing through Buxton who want a short but fulfilling ride!
TBH, it's part of a wider loop I do from home (Didsbury) which takes in the Cat & Fiddle (Macc to Buxton), then follows that route to Chapel, before heading off towards Glossop via Chinley and up Chunal hill, before turning left at Charlesworth and riding back through Marple Bridge, Offerton and Stockport. For me, that's about 80 miles and pretty tough on the legs (well, pretty tough on my legs, anyway).

I have now posted the above wider route up on Bikely:

Hey TomF that looks like a fabulous route. But unless you particularly like Macclesfield (?) you should try cutting across from Alderley Edge and down to Mottram, bollington, pott shrigley, brickworks, Kettleshulme, windgather, goyt valley, then cat n fiddle. So much better than the main road (macc to buxton) in my opinion. But I guess it would add a few miles...0

captaincavs - I can't say Macc really flicks my switch, but I tend to end up there having ridden up the Edge out of Alderley.
In fact, I rode the Old Brickwords on Saturday as part of a short (40 miles) run out before driving down to Wiltshire to visit family.
While I know Kettleshulme, I'm not sure I know Windgather - where's that and where does it take one to on the Cat & Fiddle?
