An evening with SBW

  • Having just listened to it, it makes me 😊 to discover that -by the sounds of it- he's (finally) happy in his own skin; having learned, as we all do, that we're all 'works in progress', and that the importance in being the best person that we can be; is all.

  • I have seen a couple of interviews over the last year or two with BW. I think in his career he perhaps came across as a little egotistical at times, but I always had the impression that the bravado was a bit of a front (as it so often in with many people). Sad but also important to hear from him what he has been through which clearly influenced the persona he created to deal with those issues, as well as the fame and responsibility that came with being a well known athlete,

He definitely appears to be in a much better place and has found his true self now he has spent a considerable amount of time working through his past. Hope he continues to do well.

I really hope he goes and gets professional help. He's had so many phases, I'm just not convinced by his claims he's the best he ever been, having done it all himself.

Yeah, I'm a bit sceptical on how it really is. Can't help but be concerned that the return to cycling and public life, such as the appearance on SPOTY, isn't more to do with getting out of debt than a genuine love of that scene.

That was my initial thought and concern as well, don't forget he has a new partner and very young child to support now as well as extricating himself from debt.

He did seem very confident that he was going to be able to claw a lot of that money back though.

I hadn't realised he had had issues with alcohol, well to that level anyway, in the interview he states he doesn't drink anymore, depending on how long that has been the case, and whether he is able to keep it up, I suspect that will be pivotal.

He clearly loves his children, and in the interview he states it was a conversation he had with his son that was the catalyst or turning point for him - that's pretty powerful I think, and I genuinely wish him the best.

That's probably the most reflective, thoughtful, measured and calm I have seen him with regards to the questions (some of them clearly difficult) put to him.

I think I read he's no longer with the mother of his youngest child. May be wrong though. I'm sure I read he'd been lodging with Cath again at some point.

ah ok, totally missed that, but then not surprising.

He'll definitely be needing some cash for child maintenance payments, for the next 14+ years or so.
