Yet again, Exeter is gridlocked (the main non-motorway bridge over the Exe is blocked, just leaving the one bang in the centre of Exeter), but of course on a bike the ride back from winter graduations at the university was only about five minutes slower than normal.

Definitely not cheered up that it's because of a cyclist being seriously injured at a crossing. I suspect they are doing a crash investigation now.

Hate to say it, given previous comments, but so far Google Wallet works nicely for storing tickets... as I approached Bristol Airport, the relevant ticket automatically appeared in notifications, and the ticket then automatically is displayed in maximum brightness when swiped from the notifications, and doesn't rotate to the wrong format. Quite Clever.

I must have the give all information about where I am and who I am settings switched off on my phone. Because I had to go and find them each time.
The screen shot sent to WhatsApp worked better. Particularly for my wife, who was one of the people who didnt book it.

What did cheer me up was an extra 3 days holiday in the Duoro valley at easyJet's expense.
Delayed by the storm, found a nice apartment for not much right on the river. Bought some Atlantic prawns, Portuguese steak. Some vinho verde, couple of modest meals out.
Receipts nicely in Portuguese so not quibbled.

Yeah, just tried the screenshot thing, having failed to realise I needed a QR code buried in an email attachment for tonight's shuttle bus and wound the driver up a bit, and it worked a treat for tomorrow morning's shuttle ride, isolating the QR code.

And yes, you need to allow Gmail to do clever things with relevant emails, if you want it to happen automatically.

Yes. Actually. The road along the river from Porto seemed well populated with cyclists. So did Porto. Roads seemed good (although road safety in Portugal is not much better than Italy) and though no high mountains, the terrain looked challenging enough for me.

Many, many years ago the club I rode for was sponsored by Falcon. We used to get winter frames that cost about £20 when it would cost £60 for a cheap frame. They got referred to as Japanese gas pipe specials.

Just went to my parents’ house for a bit of a family get together as we won’t see each other on Christmas Day. My 11 year old nephew was there who has a few learning and behavioural issues, he sat down at the piano and banged out a load of carols by ear.
No-one has taught him but he was playing them two handed with a sensible bottom hand part. It really shocked me especially as he seemed to just pick the correct note to start and then generally got the pattern correct. They weren’t all note perfect, I think possibly as he hasn’t mastered the flats and sharps, but they were definitely recognisable. It would be great if he could develop a real interest in it as he struggles with concentration and his reading and writing are well below standard for his age so it would be nice for him to have something he can do and that keeps him calm. I wish I had an ear like him!

Every brain is a miracle. If he has any type of school system support, it might be worth seeing if he could have some sort of lessons, with the caveat that they'd have to be pitched just right from someone who would start with his strengths rather than, say, Mozart Sonatas from notation, "hands separately first, get the fingering right", etc)
Years ago I taught someone with similar-sounding issues, who was getting my 30-minute lessons fully funded... he liked to learn to play tunes by ear on the piano first, then work out how to do them on trumpet. I could tell that he appreciated the effort to meet him on his own ground rather than force him into a rigid system, obviously only possible when it's one-to-one. I remember now the moment I referred to his foster mother by her name, and he (most unexpectedly) spontaneously hugged me.

We will, most 4 weeks of the 6 in Christchurch seeing family inc grandsprogs. A weeks cruise in Fiordland and a week cycling Alps2Ocean route on our own. We have been over about every 2 years to see family.

Ta - I've been before (once in summer ages ago and a few times skiing). and it's one of my favourite resorts. Awesome views as well. Can't wait.

Nice - had a friend who used to live in Christchurch and managed a couple of days skiing over at Mount Hutt. Would like to go back when I have more time.

Even the little shop in the middle of the village isn't silly expensive... a friend and I went in there one summer, and both of us thought we'd missed the 'dix' in front of 'huit euros'. Mind you, we were staying in Montreux (for the 'jazz' festival), so had got used to Swiss prices for everything.
Actually, another time, I cycled there and back from Montreux, and it's a lovely ride, the only disappointment being getting stuck behind a Porsche on the descent to Martigny. To be fair to the Porsche driver, he was at the back end of a line of other traffic.

You mean the 'traditional' shop that sells all the local produce? Think I know which one you mean. That said, the bars and restaurants aren't that cheap but we're only going for 5 nights.
