What's leftie about expecting farms to stand on their own two feet and stop relying on public money?

You maybe need to put it in this format to identify it as an obvious joke.

Good old traditional right wing values of state subsidies to industries. I’m surprised all these new farming supporter righties aren’t demanding state ownership to protect our food security.

Changing the subject again - I'm talking about IHT.

I think this comes back to the question of what makes farming special? All the issues they are protesting about apply to lots of other industries.

Not changing the subject: it's just bringing them more in line with everyone else.

It's panto season, so: oh yes you are.
If you can't win the debate on IHT then give up and try something else, there are plenty other arguments that you can I'm sure will pick with me in the near future 😊

I take it that people have picked up on her clarification that she's declared she's an ethnic enemy of Nigerians?
Totally helpful attitude towards ethnic tensions, religious tensions and foreign policy.

I'm waiting for a "some of my best friends are Nigerian" clarification, now.

Think it was specifically North Nigerians.

Oh, that's okay then.

I'm sure she's just been misunderstood as usual. Would currently be moderately surprised if she makes it to the next election, but the alternative was the guy who subverted the planning system for a mate, so maybe she is the best they've got.

...and that in a nutshell sums up the current state of the tory party.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

This gives a pretty good explanation of what might be behind the Nigeria comments. Assuming it's accurate then fair play to her. Why should she pretend to have performative positive feelings for a country she feels she escaped.

She grew up in Lagos in the 80s and early 90s. Things may be better now, but that was a rough time.
I remember the Lonely Planet guidebook for Lagos had one of the highlights as "surviving".
Also when I was nearby (Benin) a couple of Dutch tourists where shot on the border for refusing to pay a bribe. That's quite a shocking level of corruption and violence.

did work there around that time, lagos wasn't a place to linger, officials at the airport gave a 'pay or get searched' option, from memory 50 dollars, always carry some cash in readiness
we had armed guards for travel, electronics from uk gov's new 'secure' location was turning up in a local market (no way it could be used, but presumably someone decided it'd make a few dollars)
presumably she's fine with people fleeing that sort of place to make a new life in the uk

Think you are missing the point. As much as her comments may reflect perspectives within Nigeria, I can't see how using terms such as "ethnic enemies" is all that helpful from a British politician and potential prime minister.

Did you read the original quote? Seems to make a lot of sense to me in context and that people are trying to hang something on her words that wasn't there.

I did.
As a thought exercise, replace some of those terms. With for example "catholic" and "protestant", or "Israeli" and "Arab" and let me know how it comes across.

Quite so - being a politician ought to mean trying to use language to defuse tensions rather than stoke them, and 'enemies' is one I'd hope could be reserved for wartime. I suspect that Badenoch is aware of what she was saying conflating Islamism with 'enemies'.

I have nothing in common with people in the north of the country, the Scottish where the separatism is, those are our enemies and yet we are lumped in with those people.

She also accidentally categorised all of the north of Nigeria as Islamists. Whoops.

I think it is interesting in what it says about her views on the idea of nationhood.

Much the same. I don't see that sweeping such historic ethnic rivalries under the carpet helps anyone. Nigeria continues to suffer from the tensions created in part by arbitrary border drawing irrespective of existing boundaries. I think it's pretty clear that she now sees herself as British and her former nationality is of secondary importance. In that context she is not expressing animosity to British people from other Nigerian backgrounds but to people who try to define her as Nigerian.
I don't see why we should insist that people proudly identify with places they have for often very good reasons run away from.

I suspect (a) you are on the wrong side of this one and (b) if I had made the case you have, you'd have disagreed with me.

You've made your disdain for the Scottish Nats abundantly clear and this doesn't look that different from some of your posts, especially, before you moved to the West Country and people annoyed you by being dismissive of people living in Scotland.
It's an inevitability that people resort to verbal short cuts that over simplify ethnic and social groups and it's also an inevitability that those who find themselves over-simplified are annoyed by it.

My distaste is for a political party and a political opinion. That's different from ethnicity and it's actually a fairly offensive false equivalence.
Grow up.
