Seemingly trivial things that cheer you up

Should arrive tomorrow, so six days total.
It will be burgundy, won't it?

That will be something for the things that annoy you thread tomorrow.

Squirrel covered it. Tdlr, nope.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
The passport arrived today. Not entirely sure that its cover colour was worth leaving the EU for. That said, the rigid page that gets scanned is a good idea, and given that the photo appears three times in the passport, I'm reasonably happy I don't look like a miserable criminal in the photo.
Just sobering that I'll be 70 when it expires (if I don't before then). My (paper) driving licence will have expired a few months earlier, after 52 years of validity.

Belatedly starting my tax return, and finding the figures for my three employments already all filled in. There's a first... it a welcome, albeit overdue, improvement.
Now just to sort out the sections in self-employment and savings/investment income... they'll have to wait a few days, as I'd forgotten to note the interest on a now-closed savings account, and I can only get that figure by requesting a interest statement by post.

I've got more followers on Bluesky than Fartage. Can't think why.

Because it's a hotbed of lefties and libs? 😉

Probably. As far as I know my French female fanbase hasn't found me yet...

Incidentally, Badenoch is on Bluesky now, though not sure if she's a leftie or a lib 🤔

She might be trying to cure the rest of them.

There's lots of people not there yet and there are a few proudly proclaiming that they'll never leave. But the journalist accounts are already noticing the drop off in engagement. And once nobody's engaging it's of no use for news.

I don't know what the MAGA blue ticks will do when they've got no-one left there to be angry at and call names.

Turns out it wasn't her after all. Not entirely surprised, TBH.

There are other ways of looking at the big Twitter flounce of '24 🙂
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
It's one view, but fact free. Other opinions are available.
"Despite the opportunity that Bluesky presents, many of us will find it difficult to give up the hard fought communities we have established on X over a number of years. Friends and fellow science communicators that I have spoken to are split on the question of whether to abandon X completely, to dally with both or simply to stick with X. Some have argued that we, as scientists, need to stay on twitter to balance out the anti-science, conspiracy laden voices that are increasingly given prominence by Musk’s algorithmic tweaks. They suggest that it is our duty to combat the misinformation that is being spread on X, that we must fight for truth and speak to people where they are.
As far as communicating science goes I would not disagree with the idea that we have to speak to diverse audiences and to make the effort to meet people where they are and not just where we would like them to be. The problem with this line of reasoning is that, on X, we are being asked to fight with one hand tied behind our backs. Our posts are given less and less prominence – throttled in favour of post from users more sympathetic to Elon Musk’s world-view. It is impossible to fight disinformation on a platform in which disinformation is not just tolerated, but prized and promoted."

It is this sort of delusion of self-importance that Twitter suffers from a lot. If people like using it, then they should use it, but not under the delusion that they are saving the world.
0 -
Indeed.
Also, I think presently Twitter has c.300m monthly users, and Facebook 3bn monthly users, so if someone wanted to save the world, Facebook would be the better place to be. I suspect that its deep untrendiness here and amongst younger people means people forget the extent of its worldwide reach.

It isn't just Twitter though. It is harder and harder for people to distinguish between facts and alternative facts. I think our generation forgets that younger people have never had a world without algorithms specifically designed to promote confirmation bias.

Isn't science just a woke, leftie, libtard conspiracy now? We are further into 'who needs facts' than I thought possible.

Children are literally taught about this at school. Not absolutely everything is in terminal decline.

Yeah, but what do teachers know? Aren't they all libtards too?

I also think it is much easier to distinguish facts now. Wikipedia has a bit more depth than those red encyclopedias that predated it.

(as discussed), the reason I'm on twitter less and less is because it's basically useless for anything any more.
If I wanted to get news from there I can't any more because even the telegraph is considered lefty libtard now so actually all I hear about is made up RW conspiracy talking points.
Trying to find out about cycling or rugby is basically impossible.
It's hard to describe how bad it's gotten.
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Oh I dunno, it's a fact that the Guardian has flounced off Twitter, for starters. Although it was never more than someone's viewpoint, just one that some people on here don't happen to like.
