Well you say that but there has been an uproar when Brecon Beacons was changed to Bannau Brycheiniog, Snowdon became officially known as Yr Wyddfa and Snowdonia reverted to Eryri.

There are loads of pairs, but generally people come to sensible ways of referencing them without extra explanation.
FWIW, since you know the area, proper locals call East Budleigh just 'Budleigh' and Budleigh Salterton 'Salterton', since EB was there first (at least as a parish with the church).

The UK decided to adopt new names for places rather than keeping the name previously used in English, but this only applies to new changes e.g. Ceylon to Sri Lanka and not to old ones such as Germany.
The change from Peking to Beijing was a spelling change and not a name change.
No idea what French policy is, but note there are multiple airports with the same name e.g. Santiago, Panama City.

Then there are the hills just called Hill, or the river called River and so on. Or large parts of America where they just recycled European place names. People are not very imaginative when naming places.
The Valentia name is a bit of Roman propaganda derived from the word for strength. Other places called Valentia.

Incidentally, and relatedly, you might be aware that the French for connoisseur is connaisseur, but it's actually the English which retains an earlier French spelling, and the French who have updated theirs.

Turns out not. Named after a French dude called Vallette who was Grand Master of the Knights of St John (which eventually became St John's Ambulance) who defended Malta against the Ottomans.

You could also try smoked cheese soaked In alcohol. In the privacy of your own home, you can put that wherever you think would be most effective.
