Switching to Octopus for the 'lectric. About 5 mins online, should be up and running in two days, have said I'd like a smart meter, £50 to both @pblakeney and me, and slightly lower payment than I was making to EDF. Thanks to @TheBigBean too for the initial suggestion.

Genuinely surprised how smooth and easy it all was. Already had the 'sorry to see you're going' email from EDF, which says they'll take the final reading from the reading I've now given to Octopus. And the Octopus website dashboard is a zillion times clearer than the EDF one. Win-win, apart from for EDF.

They’re good, been with them years now. The only bad thing is their dodgy radio ads of supposedly genuine customers calling to say how amazing they are.

I've never been one for chopping & changing, as generally if I'm reasonably happy, I CBA to chase marginal discounts. The only thing I did chop & change a lot was bank and building society accounts... in my time, I've had current accounts with Barclays, Nat West, Midland, Lloyds, and Abbey National, before ending up with Nationwide, who have been unexciting but very reliable.
Electricity I've been SWEB/EDF since 1985, British Gas since 1992, landline phone I've only ever had BT then Talktalk, mobile Orange, 02 then Giffgaff.
A lot of it is inertia and laziness. But genuinely impressed with what a doddle the 'lectric change was, as I remember what a faff anything like this used to be.

If you pay for insurance I'd keep on top of that one. It's not all about the premiums but they generally shaft the lazy.

Oh, been with NFU for a long time for insurance, and though I probably do need a review, they seem to be as honest as they come, and I can always get a real person on the end of a phone. When the front of my house was re-rendered, and I realised that it was more like 50% cob rather than the 25% I'd originally thought, they came back and said "fine, no change in premium".

That's the best reason to stick as you will only find out how good they are while making a claim. Always worth doing a price comparison though, but similar? Stick.

Just spent the whole day pruning the garden. Found it strangely satisfying.

One of the advantages of having a house in a rather pretty place is getting frequent photos from nearby when I'm a long way away. Though it also makes me pine a little for my fjords... that ridge middle left is a favourite local stomp from home.

Getting a new passport (7 months before the expiry date, grrr, thanks Brexit), photo done at home only rated 'fair' on the passport office website because of slightly uneven lighting - popped it through an app to reduce facial shadow, and now it's rated 'good', so all done and the old passport's gone off in the post.
Just need the new passport to arrive before 19 December now... from what friends have told me, should be fine... but fingers crossed. FM, I'll be 70 by the time the new one expires 😭

The good people of Reddit started writing positive comments about Angus Steakhouse hoping that all the various algorithms would pick up the comments and recommend it to unsuspecting tourists leaving all the nice places crowd free. Whilst I understand their dislike of viral TikTok videos ruining great places to eat, I didn't think this was a noble campaign.
Anyway, the joke focused on the steak sandwich (something Angus Steakhouse didn't even sell), but Angus Steakhouse has had the last laugh.
" Steak Sandwich Join us in celebrating London’s best steak sandwich, as voted by Reddit!"
If Angus Steakhouse were behind the original idea, I would have to doff my hat to marketing excellence and utterly playing Redditors. There is no evidence this is the case though.

Have taken delivery of a replacement secondhand Sony HX60 camera - £170, in decidedly better condition than the one I've tried to drown in Côtes du Rhône and dropped face-down on the lens (but which is currently still working). I'll keep on using the old one till it gives up the ghost though... photos from it are still good.

It doesn't cheer me up that Quincy Jones has died, but what a legend. (Actually jealous of a pupil of mine who met him after her graduation and has a photo of herself with him.)

Maybe Angus Steakhouse is amazing and Londoners don't know because nobody goes there apart from tourists?
I don't think I have ever met anyone who has eaten there but its always been received wisdom that it must be avoided.
