That is intriguing, it is all based around the rivers, as the primary means of communication and trade I guess. My immediate thought was its resemblance to the London Tube map.

It only became convention to show north at the top after Mercator (1569).
Before that east was usually shown at the top.

I was amused by the rather jumbled arrangement of Devon, Dorset & Somerset, and by the massive river running almost from the English Channel to the Avon east of Bristol. At least the Tamar is about right. Pity they didn't check Ye Olde Googlemaps.

I find it interesting that the Forth and Clyde join up. And that Orkney is on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords.

Matthew Paris lived in St Alban's, so not really a surprise that the further north and west you go the more sketchy the map gets.

Haha, the more I look at the annotated map, the more amusing his approximations get. That must actually be the Dart, not the Tamar, and he seems to have thrown anywhere west of Hampshire and south of Bristol into the air and just put them wherever they landed.
