Seemingly trivial things that intrigue you

That is intriguing, it is all based around the rivers, as the primary means of communication and trade I guess. My immediate thought was its resemblance to the London Tube map.

Yes, I think it's a similar idea. Interesting to compare with the Gough map.

It looks phallic.
Albeit suffering from a terrible medieval affliction.

Must be the ale. The whole country has fallen over.

It only became convention to show north at the top after Mercator (1569).
Before that east was usually shown at the top.

I was amused by the rather jumbled arrangement of Devon, Dorset & Somerset, and by the massive river running almost from the English Channel to the Avon east of Bristol. At least the Tamar is about right. Pity they didn't check Ye Olde Googlemaps.

I find it interesting that the Forth and Clyde join up. And that Orkney is on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords.

Hmm….Yr Wyddfa was then referred to as Snaudun. Matthew Paris must have been a Cockney.

@Pross - it's a bit rude about South Wales.
@briantrumpet & @Dorset_Boy - I think Mr Parris was working from dubious second hand information.

Haha, thanks, will give that a better look on the laptop.

Any Lancastrians may also feel a bit miffed. Carlisle is shown just north of the Dee.

I'm fine with that.
Carlisle isn't in Lancashire anyway.

Yes, Lancashire is just missing..

“A marshy, woody, hilly, and impassible region, suitable for shepherds. The inhabitants are agile, barbaric, and warlike”
That sounds about right. He quoting Gerald of Wales who should know. 🤓

Funny how so little has changed in all that time.

Matthew Paris lived in St Alban's, so not really a surprise that the further north and west you go the more sketchy the map gets.

You would also imagine his map of the West Derbyshire constituency would be quite accurate.

Never beeb accused of being agile before

Scrum?

Haha, the more I look at the annotated map, the more amusing his approximations get. That must actually be the Dart, not the Tamar, and he seems to have thrown anywhere west of Hampshire and south of Bristol into the air and just put them wherever they landed.

Why is it that when I open most threads on here it goes to the most recent posts but on a few it goes back to older posts?
0 -
Because you haven't read them?
0 -
Nope all stuff I’ve read before. It’s like I’ve accidentally bookmarked a post or something
0 -
Noticed the same. I suspect it is because I read threads on different devices (phone and iPad) and it is somehow remembering where I last was in a thread on the specific device?
Just a guess though. Given the weirdness of a lot of this forum’s behaviour, could be just random glitch.

Should I be concerned by the BBC weather forecast of windspeeds over 24,000 mph?
At least I'm heading to London where it is only predicting 21,000mph

I think I might allow an extra five minutes to ride into work heading directly into a similar wind in Exeter.

Good day to attempt JOGLE

We've only got a paltry 5,968 mph hurricane in Sevenoaks.
