It's the BBC in general - they've really resorted to dumbing down over the last decade or so in a bid to stay relevant. BBC Wales made me chuckle yesterday - they did a piece on the winter fuel payments that involved interviewing pensioners at a bingo session. They had pensioners saying how they were worried they were going to freeze whilst they were literally gambling away their money - I couldn't work out if it was deliberate trolling or just someone in the production team with a complete lack of awareness.

I see I'll be able to use my mobile via wifi calling very soon, so it'll be goodbye to my landline number.... the main reason I've kept it is that reception in the house is so poor that the mobile has been unreliable downstairs. But if I can get 100% reception downstairs, there's no need for the landline, especially given it's a VoIP phone, so wouldn't work in a power cut anyway. I'll just be a bit sad to say goodbye to the number I've had for 32 years.
Apparently wifi calling won't work abroad, but VoLTE will make calls using mobile data (though I can't quite see what advantage that is...)

If you're lounging on a beach in a foreign land with a wifi signal or a mobile data package and wish to phone a UK number, then VOIP is a lot cheaper. Most people now get around that by calling on Whatsapp.

Yeah, I'll probably end up on the Whatsapp thing one way or another anyway (I've avoided Meta apps until now), but given Giffgaff specifically says you can't use the wifi calling option abroad, I couldn't see the benefit of voice calling going via data instead: I assume if you've got roaming for data, you've also got roaming for voice calls. Maybe I'm missing something.

I don't know your specifics, but it's easy to buy data as I mentioned in another post. It's also not that hard to buy a local SIM with a phone number, but it won't include international calls, so it's only useful for local numbers.
Although if Giffgaff block international wifi, they will probably block the VoLTE as well, so perhaps I am leading you down the garden path.
I don't have Whatsapp either and it's increasingly a pain. I'm hoping the EU get the cross platform messaging working, but I suspect that will take years.

Thanks. I guess the usefulness will very much depend on where people are going and what packages they've got. Giffgaff specifically say that wifi calling won't work abroad, but VoLTE will, so that's where data-only packages would be a godsend for voice calls (if not using Whatsapp) if there's no alternative. It won't make any difference to me in France as long as GG keep inclusive roaming, but the benefit will be worth it in my Devon house.
And yes, it would be nice if there were some cross-platform standardisation, but I don't see the incentives being there to achieve that without a push from, ha, the EU, or someone with such clout.

The EU is pushing for it, Whatsapp is required to introduce cross platform features, but I imagine they will make it dysfunctional.
Also, I suspect your Giffgaff voice calling might only work over Giffgaff data...
