I don't think unions need any encouragement to argue for their members. That's their whole raison d'etre. And not that different from any other lobby group arguing for tax breaks or subsidies for their members.

I know it is the Telegraph so will be discounted as not being from a Cake Stopper Approved Source, but it seems our new Chancellor claimed £3,700 notes in heating energy support, and our "I'm working class, me" Ange claimed £5,200. Mind you I can see why they'd struggle on their £90k salary unlike those pensioners living high on the hog on £80k less.

But do you really think that taking money off the elderly is making the people with the broadest shoulders carry the burden?
Not all pensioners are as well off as your extended family.

Because those who have spent 40 years pissing it up and not bothering saving anything will get it but the couple who have been a bit frugal and acquired a modest amount of savings will lose out. By this I mean state pensioners not those with a private pension.

And compensated for with an above inflation pension rise.
I don't understand the ire with this one other than the cutoff being too blunt. Should've tied it to council tax bands perhaps.

I think Labour's messaging has been poor (combined with the Right's determination with the aid of their friends in the media, to hammer them with anything, even if they hope we'll all forget that they planned to do it too). They should be focusing on the aim of targeting aid where it's most needed, and if they are keeping to their austerity-lite agenda, that's why it can't be universal. Well, that kinda fing. Just keep hammering home the targeting within a tight budget (and blame the Tories for that).

True. In other cases, they go for protectionism like some of the - ahem - professional bodies. Or if they know they are providing an essential service with no alternative providers, they just put up the price. And if it gets too expensive, the government can sub everyone's bills. Obviously then it's all good stuff because it's a corporation getting the big hand out rather than a bunch of employees.

There were more Tory MPs in the last parliament, and there's more Labour MPs represent constituencies in London so don't need a second home, so you'd expect them to spend more. It's fine.

It’s been discussed for years and I’m pretty sure the media were pushing for it at one point with stories of famous old rock stars claiming it. The only argument against seems to have been that it would be difficult to do. It’s a no brainer and I’m struggling to understand why it’s even controversial.
