No British team at Euro road champs

Though he had also won 5 stages (including the Champs Elysée) and the green jersey in the Tour that year, which probably had a bit more of an impact

We are all aware of the history but the Cav win apart the only rider I can remember being in the mix in the final stages of the mens race is David Millar.
We've done a bit in the women's though I doubt Nicole Cooke would give much credit to BC.
I just think road cycling is by far the highest profile cycle sport and GB these days should turn up every year with at least one contender and support riders. The days when we sent Wegelius and he rode for another nation or the likes of Rob Sharman were applauded just for finishing should be long gone.

I can't think of many British riders who have won one day races.

For a national federation? They're fielding teams for how many events? 3? Worlds, Euros, and Nationals?

Pidcock would seem to be the standout in recent years.

The Euros is a very minor race.

Lizzie Deignan might want to debate that point with you.

Olympic events were thin on the ground in 2011!
2012 a better example maybe with Wiggo's Tour + Olympic ITT trumping any number of double gold medallists from the OGs.

Fair point, well made - my mistake.

In a similar vein (kinda)
Someone talked smack about the Cookes on STW and Daddy Cooke Cooked...
I don't think he can be considered an entirely balanced source but if you were following the sport in those times, it's worth a read...

I stopped listening to Nicole Cole when she complained about the kit she got compared to the mens squad. She left out that it was the mens track squad and she got the same kit as the men's roast squad.

Daddy Cooke has always been a gentleman; erudite, honest and reliable.
I have been a fan of Nicole since she was mid-teens, an awesome athlete and one of the very best Wales has had.

I remember seeing her racing the boys in the crust they used to do around city hall / Cardiff Uni when she was about 10. She definitely had to fend for herself for much of her career and then seemed to struggle when BC support finally came around.

I once talked to a leader of Wales's Commonwealth Games team. They said they would open a bottle of champagne when Cooke retired. Her and particularly her father were making stupid demands of a team with a limited budget.
It's notable that she couldn't hold down a place on a team for more than a year. In 2008 Brailsford had to create the Halfords team just for her. And she threw it back in his face.

Nice tangent. I remember hearing from someone I know that coached her at one point that physiologically she wasn't that impressive, but her determination to succeed was immense and she would turn herself inside out to win stuff. It's not hard to imagine she wouldn't be an easy teammate. To be clear I'm saying that as a fan.

I'll leave it, I'll take my own personal experience, thank you.

Going way back I knew a couple of people familiar with Nicole Cooke's dad and people within BCF/BC. I do remember they did think her dad was a bit pushy with regards expectations of equipment from Rourke's who I think were helping out/had a sponsorship arrangement (I don't know which). I didn't get the impression they disliked him though and they weren't very complimentary about people within BC - can't remember if they had an opinion on Sutton. I can imagine as female rider at that tie needed all the backing they could get and in general pushy parents can help.

Did they even have one, wasn't it hosted on the British Cycling one?

Even the Vatican have managed a team despite it being on Sunday.
I noticed that the French didn't manage a rider in the men's TT yesterday. Is that a deux vitesse / not worth it thing? They're riding on Sunday.

Only 6 teams in the mixed relay apparently

I’m not surprised as you’d be racing for a jersey you never get to race in.

Isn't the Vatican "team" just that 1 guy
From Argentina or somewhere originally and now does the first 100k of international races then climbs off
Started in the Aussie worlds

He is Dutch, married to an Australian diplomat to Vatican, thus has residential rights.
The Pope blesses his bike. He rides until pulled by comms for being too far back and potentially lapped. Lap 1 in Wollongong. I gave him a beer on his only climb up Ramah Ave.
The bike is then auctioned off for a Vatican children's charity for many thousands of euros.
To be fair to him he's a decent club cyclist who would be the fastest on most club rides. A pan flat course like this and he should stay with the peloton until the final laps.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the break again like at Glasgow.

How would you expect Mark Cavendish to react in the same situation?

I am not sure he would fit into Nicole Cooke’s kit.

She got the same kit as the men's road team. But that wasn't mutch of a story to tell.
