No British team at Euro road champs

It has been reported that British Cycling are not sending team to Limburg next week. No reason given, but speculation is budget.

https://cyclinguptodate.com/cycling/great-britain-will-skip-this-years-european-road-championships-not-allowing-joshua-tarling-to-defend-his-time-trial-title

Thoughts?

I find it odd. Probably the same folk will be heading to Zurich the following week for the worlds.

One of the biggest issues race organisers here are having is attracting Euro teams to races in UK. This follows the issues with carnets etc that several teams had at ToB last year and year before, as well as travelling through to CX world cup at Dublin, and then the bike thefts at Fort William week and Womens ToB

Should BC not be doing their utmost to have a Euro team?

What is going on with British cycling. Appalling.

Boom and bust. Sponsorship and funding. In other words, the money is drying up.

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Britain is sending more riders than ever to the Tour. It should not be difficult to a) host a 1 week stage race and b) SEND A TEAM TO AN INTERNATIONAL RACE

You do realise that British Cycling has nothing to do with the Tour?

And that the current crop of riders moving through to the World Tour are products of that boom in the 2010s. It wll be interesting to see if that is still happening in 10 years time.

Tour of not going past their house?

GB Cycling decided that after all the complaints about the ToB not going past people's houses, they'd rebrand the Euro selection as the Tour of Staying At Home In Our Houses

No it’s a reflection that they’re now a major part of the peloton and so not being able to field a team for the euro champs is pretty pathetic.

Could anyone care less about the European champs? How long had it been a thing?

I bet most people would struggle to name the last three European Champions without resorting to procyclingstats.

    I don't think I can.

    I can.

Laporte, Jakobsen, Colbrelli, can't remember, can't remember, trentin.

You need a cycling organisation that is interested. British Cycling are about the Olympics, and track in general.

They run the Tour of Britain too right?

The most disgraceful website I’ve ever seen for a race

That tour-of-britain.com website is a scammer site.

They stepped in to run it in January this year after Sweetspot went bust. BC don’t really organise events, even things like National Champs are put out to bid as far as I’m aware e.g my old club has run the National CX Champs on a couple of occasions.

  • And realistically, if someone's raced at the OGs and is going to the WCs, what relevance is the EC? The pro season does not exactly lack for high profile competitive opportunities for the top riders even without the OGs. An Under 23 and Junior event makes much more sense.

I think it's poor - nobody watches Track yet because of our stupid funding rules we pour money into that while uk road racing is dying on its arse. It's not just the Euros how often do GB do anything at the Worlds?

Just the five World Championship medals last year, five in 2022 and three in 2021.

  • Topped the medal table at the Worlds in 2022?

You might not, but given that UK Sport cares about medals at World Championship and Olympic level above all else, then BC do.

The general public care far more about an Olympic gold medal in a random track event than they do about a world champs on the road.

The UK hasn't had many potential winners and Glasgow did host it recently. That said, I do think they should send a team

On the men's side, Britain has won two World Championship road races in almost a hundred years of races being held. If you think you the British team should be winning more, I'd love to hear your strategy for making this happen.
