Olympics 2024

Not sure. When we had London 2012 every city that wasn't London that had a sniff of olympic in placement got a bit excited. I can't remember why, but I have a distinct memory of 5 giant Olympic rings on the Mound in Edinburgh. I think there was some diving training going on in the Commonwealth Pool or something. Or perhaps something at Murrayfield.
It was tenuous anyway, but there was a bit of excitement.

LOL
It seems as if the GB Olympic team will take longer to cross the channel than the average illegal immigrant…..sorry, refugee.
Next Sunday evening on BBC 1 Is dedicated to their homecoming.
Basically an opportunity for a bit of flag waving and the Glastonbury treatment, only without some of the star quality.

Pfft, who cares?
Competitive cup-stacking, that's where it's at.

Paging Dan B - Pauline is now gripping the shaft of the flagpole

This is all beyond me. Just have a bit of a party and say we've all had a nice time

The bloke in the gold won, so the rest of them have the right hump, I think.

The Tour of Poland also starts tomorrow. However it’s again missing from the Eurosport, events we cover, calendar.

Ah, the Olympic rings. Perhaps they'll illuminate too.

Just switched on a few minutes back. Who's the wasp guy, and what's with the grey people and why does it feel like it's going on for ever?
1 -
Because it did go on forever.

I do like that song from Drive though. Fair play.

Maybe that was the organisers' way of making sure that the crowd didn't ask for an encore.

I'm sure there's a sensible reason for it, but I'm intrigued as to why the LA rowing won't be in Lake Casitas, as it was when Sir Steven won his first gong. Has it evaporated due to global warming?

Should have read this before making my previous post!
Don't think the change to 1500m will affect much. They've all got 4 years to train for it, and 1500m is still primarily an endurance event. It will favour slight more "sprinty" athletes, but there's no reason to think that GB's rowers are as a cohort more or less sprinty than other national squads. It's not like the 2000m class has been abolished with everyone now having to compete over 500m, which was previous the speciality of a handful of nations.

Given the 7 hour time difference, the rowing finals should be on at peak viewing time in the UK.

Apparently unreliable water levels, and it's quite a long way from LA. This doesn't seem to be an issue for the white water canoe events, being held a mere 1,300 miles away. Makes sense to use what cities/countries already have rather than building loads of white elephants.

Dimly remember the GB coxed 4 doing its stuff early/mid pm UK time in 1984, given the morning scheduling of the rowing finals.

I think when discussing which sports should be included whether it leaves a load of white elephants should be a factor. Track cycling looks a bit weak on this front.

LA and Brisbane already have decent velodromes, so no worries there.

I quite like the swimming getting temporary facilities this time and in 2028. Means that they can get the crowds, but the city doesn't try and build something like Hadid's design for London.

The US has really nailed down the "pool in a big stadium" concept. They do it for their Trials each year, and for the OGs this year, they used the Lucas Oil Stadium, home stadium of the Indianapolis colts. It still costs a tidy wedge to install the pool and rejig the seating, but the atmosphere was apparently off the scale, as they could accommodate a crowd of circa 20k, more than in Paris. I think the seating capacity for the LA swimming will be 40k or so, and should generate a lot of noise for Michael Phelps' comeback!

The French didn't do too bad changing the use of this place.

Does this comment stand?

A classic one was the World cup football 2022. I remember there was a constant stream of negative stories about the heat and why it was being held/played in Qatar. The tournament was a cracker, pretty much every match was brilliant. It even settled the old Ronaldo/Messi debate.
So I'd say yes. With regards the Olympics I remember one where a lot of the buildings constructed weren't being used afterwards, those stories dragged on a bit, Athena's? Without Google cheating.

Apparently it wasn't big enough to accommodate the desired number of spectators and the standard pool depth for major champs of 3m. The depth used was 2.15m, to allow a few extra rows of seats, with a lot of complaints before / early on that the shallowness made it a "slow" pool. But as always, the competitors make the racing, fans adjusted to World Records being the exception rather than the norm, and there weren't any complaints from the winners!

I also heard that since they designed the pool, the "rules" have changed an now every competiotion pool needs to be 2.4m depth - it would not meet criteria made since it was built.

Yeah, they need to worry less about stuff like that - it's a race.

No, the closing ceremony triggered memories of the opening ceremony farce. The bits inbetween were pretty good other than the stupid decision to do the swimming in a polluted river.

How do competitors put their feet down if they're tired?
