US Politics / Biden thread

I appreciate this has no evidence base and is entirely anecdotal but I had a gut feeling Trump would win in 2016, a similar feeling that Biden would win last time out, and the old gut was once again in action, gravitating towards Labour winning big about 18 months ahead of the GE.
It is very much leading me to a Harris win in November!
Being slightly more serious, I do think polls this time will be so close and within the margin of error either way as to be largely irrelevant. My instinct coupled with some educated guesswork as to how this pans out, lands me on the side of a Harris win. I do think this time that a decent chunk of voters Trump managed to win over in 2016 will desert him and I think Harris has enough to win them over.

It boggles my mind, but I think she'll win a (relatively) decent majority of the vote, but lose the electoral college.

Could well happen. I too think she will win the popular vote, and possibly by a strong margin. It is a close call as to where those votes may fall and whether this is enough to get Harris to 270.

There is a song about that but I’m not going to link as it’s shit.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Don't talk such garbage!

No. Not Garbage, The Smiths.

Heaven knows I'm miserable now.

That's why I liked the comment, much as I like Jonny Marr's guitar playing, the Smiths are shit and Morrisey is an insufferable prick of the highest order. Even worse than that twat Musk 😁

I love the Smiths but hate Morrisey.

Obviously I understand that, I just can't listen to them because of him. My son has wound up seeing a tribute band called the Smyths a few times. He says they're good because it's like the Smiths without the twat.

Morrissey is the only one of the Smiths to put any decent music out since they split.
Anyway, talk now of Trump ditching JD Vance - possibly getting a woman in - maybe Nikki Hayley - as a running mate . I've even heard some discussion of Trump standing down if he can cut a deal to avoid jail time - I can't really see how that happens as the Democrats probably want Trump to be the candidate now polls are moving Harris' way. Most of the pundits Iisten to haven't got things consistently right so far though so who knows.
My guess is Trump will replace JD but he'll continue to slide as he makes further public gaffes and Harris increasingly looks like the adult in comparison. I suspect Harris will try and be as uncontroversial as she can and let Trump lose it rather than her trying to win it.

Get The Message is more than decent.

Trump has agreed to a TV debate with Harris.
The first question will be "Who is best. Billy Bragg or Morrissey?"

I’m wondering if Biden holding on so long before quitting was a deliberate tactical master stroke or just a bit of luck.

Starting to see a small number of journos posing the question of whether Trump will pull out if it really starts to look like there is a serious chance he will lose.
You could see it happening, he'd pull put citing a left wing conspiracy to rig the election and stop him becoming President, so he had to pull out to protect all true patriots from such a travesty.

Think he'll replace Vance before he replaces himself.

It's less than a month since Trump was shot at and had reelection locked up

I was expecting Trump to dine out on the assassination attempt for months. But I guess Biden & Harris have now pissed on his chips.

Obviously he's the extreme anti vaccine "candidate".

Plenty of rumours about that too. The Democrats have started pursuing a media strategy of calling Trump/Vance and pretty much most Republicans "weird". It is quite funny as it is driving the Republicans mad. It is also starting to stick, and quite a good strategy as it just undermines anything Trump says. It is hard to come back from people constantly labelling you as a weirdo!

Just read an article saying that the good side effect of positioning yourselves as the "not weird" party means you hopefully refrain from saying some of the weird stuff that the party base would like you to.
Also, Trump is just deeply weird in every way.

I always say this to people about Trump. Imagine if you took away the fact that he is famous and was just a regular person you met as a party. After having a conversation with him, you would think he was absolutely unhinged, genuinely in need of psychiatric treatment.

People that have met him don't say that- they generally say that he can be quite funny and charming but likes things to centre around him.

Err yeah, charming. He incited a coup to overthrow his own government, regularly makes blatantly racist and misogynist comments, is a pathological liar who has trashed journalists and democratic institutions. Oh yes, and also a convicted felon. Likes things to centre around him is perhaps something of an understatement.

Janey Godley had it correct: "Trump is a Cxxt"

But other than that he's charming and funny

I'm kind of surprised none of you seem to have met people who are charming 1 on 1, but that are also massive see you next Tuesdays
