I've made a list of what I'm aiming to see some of, or at least the pointy end of, in this years Olympics.

Athletics, mostly the track events rather than field.

    BMX Freestyle and Racing

MTB Cross country - rooting for Pidders and PFP of course.

    Road Race and TT events

Pretty much all of the Track cycling

Skateboarding street (Not sure what to expect with that one, but will go in with an open mind)

    Skateboarding park

    Table tennis

Maybe a bit of tennis as well.

Do people still play squash? I thought it was a thing of the 80s.

I had some lessons in school, but didn’t get on with it, I preferred tennis, table tennis and badminton. I guess I wanted to face my opponent and not stand next to them.

Fwiw I quite like the Olympic road cycling race. It's always nice to see riders racing for their national teams not their trade teams and the change in dynamic. It's also produced some strong winners, and I think it's just about important enough to justify keeping.

WADA stripping things from LA sounds on trend. 😉

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Park is basically a real world Tony Hawks game

(we should start a petition for them to play jimmy eat world over it instead of commentary...)

  • Peaty's in with a good shout, but Qin, last year's World Champ went faster last year than Peaty has since Tokyo.

I think the men's 4*2 freestyle relay is the only "nailed on" gold for, barring illness, injury and false starts.

Hodgkinson is almost nailed on, but as they don't run in lanes, there's far more that can go wrong than for the swimmers to disrupt tactics e.g. getting boxed in.

Kerr in with a good shout in the 1500m, but Ingebritzen has run a lot faster (3:26.7 this seasons vs Kerr's PB of 3:29.0 in Tokyo final) so it's Ingerbritsen's to lose. I hope it's Kerr, as I can spell his name.

Doubtless there will be mutiple track cycling and rowing golds, just on the law of averages, but I wouldn't want to pin them down to specific events.

  • Always a handy skill to have, if my reading of the Flashman novels is a reliable window into history. Though Flashman himself seemed to excel at an extra discipline, which also involved horses. At least I assume that's what he meant with references to "bonny young fillies" and "galloping for hours in their comfortable saddles".

In terms of professional squash, it is massively dominated by Egyptian players, both mens and womens game. Twenty years ago it was a much broader range of nations represented.

In terms of general participation, I would guess it has dwindled, certainly in the UK. I don't play anymore as there are literallyno courts near me. A decade ago there were at least 4 venues with courts within 20mins. I guess that tells its own story.

It was hugely popular, I think the local dentists had their own league at one point.

I think the facilities required are expensive and too specialist if few people want to play, whereas the local sport centre can re-purpose a space to cover the other racket sports as required.

I also found it downright dangerous.

As I said above thread, I have a gut feeling Ingerbritsen won't mess up tactically a third time. He reminds me a bit of the 400m runner Sanya Richards. She was far faster than Christine Ohuruogu but kept getting the tactics wrong in major finals. When she finally got it right, she won Olympic gold. I have the feeling Ingerbritsen may do the same in the 1500m. I hope not though.

Why is Andy Murray going, is he really one of our best tennis prospects currently. Shirley it would better to give one the young ones the experience as he’s unlikely to not be injured after his first match never mind win anything..

If you're a 7s or football player and you get knocked out now. Do you stay for the rest of the games?

Cos...that could be an epic fortnight...

Not even playing singles now. Thought it a waste of time but I’d actually forgotten Murray won back to back golds and not just the 2012 title, so the games probably hold special memories and don’t begrudge him. Could be wrong but think he qualified as a previous gold medal winner and isn’t denying any other Brits a spot.

All being well and they both make the final Ingerbrigtsen’s only chance is taking the race out hard and ramping the pace up from the front. If Kerr is still there in the last 200m (think he will be) he’ll take him.

Thought the same, it’s like he’s been gifted a place for nostalgic reasons, same as with Wimbledon. I’m a fan of Murray but Olympic places should be earned.

Good point, I know Ingerbritsen has no real sprint, so as you say, if Kerr is within sight at the final bend he should have the kick. It could be one of the best events on the track.

  • My guess is that there are enough in the field wary of Kerr's finish that someone will take the pace on sufficiently hard and sufficiently early to "run the finish out" of him. Going back a bit, and there's documented steroid enhancements involved, but in the 1980 OGs, Jurgen Straub knew he wasn't going to be able to out-sprint Coe or Ovett off a slow pace in the 1500m, so he basically time trialled the final 700m (after a slow first two laps) on the front as if it was an 800m race, and did just enough to blunt Ovett's finish, though not Lord Seb's.

I hope not though! Hopefully the Diamond League pacemaker, pace lights experience will have dulled the tactical savviness of those with the potential to do that.

  • That's a bit harsh on SRR. She only really underperformed in 2008 and there's a quite sad medical story behind that.

I think it's more that CO had the ability to get it right when any notionally faster athlete got it wrong in a final, as was the case in 2007 and 2013 when she won the World gold.

Though the previous 2 mishaps were in the world championships and he is the reigning Olympic 1500m champ with an already Stella career at just 24years of age.

I used to play squash, but gave it up when I had chronic lower back pain, not caused by the game, but probably aggravated by it.

I think I'm on top of it now, so could probably play again, but I'm not sure I know that many people who would consider playing, plus it's VERY difficult to play someone of a vastly different level if that makes sense, it becomes a bit of a farce.

It's such a good workout though, and if you've had a tough day you can really take it out on that squash ball.

Love all the variations of the angles, and spin of the walls you can achieve, drop shots, and lobs etc, highly enjoyable game imho, but does take some getting used to.

We still have local courts, but I think the only thing they sometimes re-purpose them for is table tennis, where as mentioned further up, badminton courts can be re-purposed for many other sports, and in theory don't actually need any walls, versus the 4 walls the squash court clearly requires.

I didn't realise the game was in such decline, that's quite a shame if so.

One of my son's best mates plays semi pro. I didn't realise it was in decline either - the leisure centre where i used the gym has courts which seem busy and there's a private squash club quite near too - I know a few people who gave played casually including my brother and daughter though never tried it myself.

I used to play also, before breaking my ankle (not playing squash). I seem to remember it being relatively expensive, but the main issue is that in a world where sport is fuelled by TV coverage, it's not easy to televise. I think it is for this reason that it has been relegated to being amongst a plethora of minority sports.

The easiest way back in is to go to some club nights (especially ones with a coach). You can then do some drills and play short matches against various people.

Didn't squash acquire one of the highest death rates in sport at one time?

Wouldn’t surprise me, middle aged folk who largely lived a sedentary lifestyle, suddenly chasing a bouncy rubber ball around a court with a lot of hard surface to bounce off, not a good mix.

Amongst amateurs it was top of the pile at one point, it even acquired the rather unflattering moniker of 'heart attack alley'. I suspect a lot of cases were probably people with undiagnosed heart conditions. Squash is largely anaerobic with big spikes in effort, so not a good combo with underlying heart conditions.

Fair point, unflattering of me to critique a multiple world and Olympic champion. Also, should have acknowledged that CO got her races spot on when she beat SRR, as you say.
