My local garage always has very long waiting lists for mot but you can get it much quicker at an ATS euromaster type garage.

For MOT go to a garage that only does MOTs and not repair work. That way they are not interested in failing you in order to get the work. There should be plenty around if you can't book in at a time that suits you.

My thinking went along the lines of tyre specialists having a reputation for finding reasons to fail. Might go some way to explain why the other garages are busy.

Makes me realise how lucky I've been with my garage... been going to them probably 25 years now, never felt they've used the MOT to force unnecessary work to the car on me. They apologise if it's more than a couple of weeks before they can do something.

Thanks. Tbf the usual place I go to I have good relationship with. Never failed etc. Discusses with me which parts to go for (always offers options for different prices) and he’s pretty honest and costs it all out for me before he does it, including labour and doesn’t take offence when you say no to certain work.

I see two options. 1. Central Cambridge, with maximum demand and a long wait. 2. Central London, which will be most expensive, and will be difficult to get to.

RER journeys are going up to 6 euros from 5 euros, not exactly a huge increase in actual terms but still 20% for every journey. Apparently the aim is to get visitors to cover the additional cost of transport provision. I always thought the idea was to get people coming and the host city then benefits from a boost to their economy. We're only there by accident, my daughter wanted to go to Paris and Disneyland for her 21st and it just happens to overlap with the Olympics. We'll probably only spend 1 or 2 days in the city itself.

Does anyone ever send a read receipt? I always just delete the request. Cold emails get junked and their domain added to my block list unless it is actually something interesting (rare or never).

All the tourist sites are basically no-go areas during the olympics, which strikes me as a shame, but they are absolutely paranoid about terrorism.

If it's a Chippy McChirpy email from someone selling something, it's annoying though.
I get a lot of these selling patent drafting and portfolio management services. Being sent unsolicited emails with a read recept to do badly but cheaply what you trained for 5 years to do well adds an extra layer of annoyance.

Yeah, only heard that a couple of days ago. Our favourite spot is around the Latin Quarter and we were also hoping to take more of a look around Montmartre, hopefully they won't be too restricted (Latin Quarter should be fine).
Again, it is very weird to host the world's biggest sporting event and then go out of your way to make it difficult for tourists. London managed the terrorism threat without closing off the city. Part of the issue in Paris is also that they have set up temporary venues in places like Place de la Concorde which is quite a good thing, using the city itself and avoiding white elephant venues.

Do you not have a way of previewing emails without opening them?
I do, and any obvious junk gets moved to Junk, which then sends all future emails from the sender there. I occasionally screen the junk mails to check they are indeed junk and then delete them all.

I always think of them as someone trying to stitch you up at some point in the future (or with most of the people who use them, so they can go back to the client 5 minutes later and say "he's received it but hasn't replied").

I hate the unsolicited emails where you get one along the lines of "you must have missed my previous email, I appreciate everyone is busy but please let me know when we can have a conversation to discuss the shitty service I'm offering that has no relevance to your business". Actually, no I didn't miss it I just ignored and deleted it and if you'd bothered researching my profile on LinkedIn or wherever you got my contact details you'd see it isn't remotely relevant.

Misleading advertising. Example this morning on the radio (from memory).
"97% (sample 100) of professional regular users of product A prefer it over all the competition."
Of course they bloody well do. Same survey of product B regular users would be similar.
Although I am confused by the 3 using products they consider inferior. And it's not just price as they aren't the cheapest.
