US Politics / Biden thread

I think part of the problem with Biden (apart from age) is he was just too decent for modern US politics... he still wanted to try to see the good in people and 'reach across the aisle'. Trump and his team doesn't do decent. I think Harris will be more vocal in showing her distaste and hammering home why Trump is not fit to be POTUS.

Maybe Vance has a future in comedy, just without the jokes bit. I'm not sure that they are going to be able to weaponise the jibes about Harris's laugh.

Nice to see Republicans showing their class when dealing with the now ex-head of the Secret Service

Her decision to call it then, and be first to shift momentum towards/consolidate the centre around Biden (who was struggling) may proof to have been a fabulous decision

ha. I know we all need a lot of copium to deal with trump, hell knows I do, but that’s an….interesting interpretation

She spent lots of money early and ran out before primary season. It looked like a terrible campaign but look where she is now.
If you though Biden was the likely winner four years ago and wouldn't do two terms, then getting prime position to be vp was pretty effective. Very lucky.

It seems to me that if your thought process is now "I don't like the Democrat selection process, so I'm voting Trump", you were just looking for any reason to vote trump. Now the opponent isn't too old, you need to something else.

No, I don't see much evidence that she's a good campaigner beyond "vibes". She's obviously good at making her way through the democrat party, but that does not an election win. Like I said, the one time she did run she faltered pretty rapidly.
The best candidates always come from actually winning a campaign. Trump did, Obama did etc etc.
It's not hard to run Trump close. Even Biden was doing that in an plainly unfit state.
If she won a quick election process in the party i'd be more confident; not least as you learn a lot from those experiences.

I think a campaign of not being an elderly white male is a good starting point and not being a convicted criminal is an added bonus (or at least it should be but USA...)

It shouldn't really be difficult to beat Trump. An awful lot of people dislike him. Democrats and Biden specifically are making it hard work. There are a lot of good people there who have president potential - Harris included.
I'd just like to have seen them tested.
At least give Harris the presidential job for 6 months, something to make it look like anything other than a Veep episode.

Disliking Trump won't persuade Republicans to vote Democrat though, it's liking expecting United supporters to start supporting City as they don't like ten Hag. Trump also seems to have engaged a section of morons who probably never went to the ballot box by conning them into believing a billionaire businessman is anti-establishment and one of them.

There is a bump in some of the polls, not others. And there is still no running mate.
This could get interesting. I'm more hopeful that sanity will prevail than I was a couple of weeks ago.

Sanity?!
In US politics?

Although Buttigieg is very very good, I'm not sure that the US is yet quite ready for a gay VP. I think his time might come later. In the meantime, there are some more central contenders who would have wide appeal, including those parts of the electorate that might not vote for Buttigieg.
0 -
Yep, very unlikely to be Buttigieg, but I am going to stick my neck out and say he will be the Presidential nominee at some point in future.
I would guess it will be Josh Shapiro, with Mark Kelly an outside bet.

To be blunt, they need a not too old white male as running mate, to balance concerns in some parts that the presidential candidate isn't.
0 -
Ah, the world's greatest democracy where being gay is still a probable reason to put off the electorate.
0 -
Yep, that's what I was implying in my comment. Agree with @MidlandsGrimpeur2 about the likely options to fill that role.
What astounds me is that Trump was holding a sizeable chunk of black, latino, military, police and women voters, despite his being a racist, misogynist, convicted felon. I think Harris will win back a good portion of the PoC vote who might have hesitated with Biden, and a NTOWM running mate would broaden the appeal.
Still not dissuaded from my conspiracy theory about the timing of this all. Will we ever know if this plot was hatched back when Biden appointed Harris to be his running mate?

An atheist would potentially be even less likely to be elected.

I always assumed that when Biden announced Harris four years ago, that the plan was for him to beat Trump and then serve one term and hand over to her.
I think the wider Trump base comes down to his being viewed as a successful businessman. The aspirational idea appeals to a lot of voters, particularly amongst black and latino communities. The thing is, he isn't really that successful. He inherited it from his father, has had his businesses declared bankrupt six times, and regularly inflates his personal wealth and value of various assets.

I'm counting down the days before Trump says she wasn't born in the US.

Close - from 2020.

That's the challenge, for sure. The cultish behaviour of supporters is, well cultish. I think some would almost certainly be in Jim Jones territory, if Trump pulled that metaphorical (or real( trigger.
But I think the black and latino voters (and some of the women) will have at least noticed Harris, whereas they might have discounted Biden out of hand.

A useful Tweet to read the comments, from a kinda Republican perspective... seems to be veering towards Kelly.

I don't think there is much in it, Shapiro is a heavyweight Governor of a huge rust belt state whilst Kelly is a former Naval Captain and Astronaut. I think they both give a fair bit of heft to the ticket. Both would also make JD Vance look like a complete lightweight, politically speaking

There is always the reality of them all being delusional 😄

They do, Pennsylvania and Arizona respectively. Both are big 'battleground' states.
