Would the US be better off as two countries? You could have some sort of Republican, er, "Confederacy" and a kind of "union" of Democratic states to the north and along the west coast.

It seems unlikely that a bullet would nick the top of his ear without disturbing his hair - remarkable though his hair is.
Seems more likely to be a shard of glass from his teleprompter getting hit by the shooter, but that's a less dramatic narrative.

Maybe his current covid will be enough to tip the balance. He can retire gracefully, with a pretty impressive four years of achievements, and still give advice built on his long experience of how to work the weird machine of US Government (I think the evidence is that he's been cannier than the more youthful and charismatic Obama). But age has caught up with him... much more quickly than with the older Nancy Pelosi, who still had the sense to call it a day.
