What's stark? That less than half the number of 25-34 year olds are now married compared to in 1968?
0 -
-
Well if they aren't married in in a long term relationship it's pretty hard for them to live with a partner. There's a small increase in those living with a room mate and a moderate rise in those living witha family member plus more living alone which suggests that it's easier to afford housing as an individual salary (this is presumably not the case but shows you can ake what you want of the graphs).

Yeah the living with spouse number fell 41%. Around 25% of that is accounted for by being not married.
Of the 16% drop in people living as a couple, I'd warrant that a good number is the same cause. Living alone is expensive so moving from shared accommodation to living with a partner is a pretty natural transition.
Is any of this shocking? Or are we going to get a graph of something that follows roughly the same or opposite trend to show a rebuttable presumption of causality, followed by some GIFs and ever stronger assertions.

I think it has huge implications across society and so much of the analysis just ignores it and pretends like this doesn't massively impact politics.
Everyone talks about how volatile it all us, and you've got these really dramatic changes and no-one is paying attention.
0 -
Next you'll be saying that they need to build more houses.
0 -
Sorry, what dramatic changes, that about 15% fewer 25-34 year olds are in a committed cohabiting relationship?
Is it because more people are going to university, or US society doesn't compel quite a many people to procreate at the earliest opportunity?
You've decided on the cause now and are going to find something to support that, in a totally social scientifically rigorous manner. I can just feel it coming, like an approaching tube train with "not in service" on the front.
0 -
Why, what cause have I proposed?
Or are you just assuming ;)
Housing theory of everything doesn't really apply to large parts of America as they do build houses. Check out Austin!

Can I have a brief synopsis of your thoughts to how this impacts US Politics / Biden?
0 -
I was just assuming it would be something about housing. Don't ask me why.

Do you know what surprises me, is how many houses in the US are made from wood when they get tornado and things. Like we don't and ours are nice sturdy brick jobs.

I'm mean castles made of sand fall in the sea eventually, Jimi Hendrix new this.

Elon Musk wouldn't have a wooden house.

I think living either with flatmates or with your parents, of which there has been a huge increase, is really infantalising and I think part of the attractiveness of people like Trump to young people, especially men, is in part because of their frustrations with the situation.
If you're not living with your spouse or partner, chances are you're not having much sex - this is also born out in attitude surveys which show younger people have less sex - I think that is also turbocharging the whole incel / far right, andrew tate style politics which orbits around Trumpism, and the corrolary which is women seeing men as more threatening than ever.
It is also harder to take responsibility for your life and be responsible if you're still living like a student/child etc.
I'd suggest you're more likely to be unhappy with your lot - you're much less likely to have children in that living situation so that also impacts the fertility rate, which has impacts on demographics and the requirement for immigration labour yadayadayada
One's housing situation is so fundamental to your life, i can't see why it wouldn't have a huge impact.

There might be a bit in that actually, also of recent times this social media image of people leading these fantastical lives, which isn't an attainable reality for the majority.
0 -
You got all of that from the graph?
0 -
Trump appeals to the less intelligent.
The less intelligent are less likely to reflect those broad changes to the same degree.
Those broad changes are common to many countries other than the US.
Comment.

It's living with parents or other family members. There are large parts of the US where that doesn't rule out they are co-habiting in a sexual relationship.
2 -
I can see your point for people trapped living with parents but surely the reason that people are not living with spouses/partners in a lot of cases is because they don't have one? I don't think that building houses will make weird incel types any more likely to suddenly get into a loving relationship.
When I moved in with my girlfriend, i moved out of a flatshare that was more expensive and into a smaller flat (because we only needed one bedroom)

Not sure a Barratt home would do all that much better in a tornado to be honest. At least wood is flexible. Statistically, you are quite unlikely to be in the path of one anyway.
Done right, actually makes more sense to build using wood.

Large parts of the US have no suitable clay for making bricks. We don't really get tornados and when we do they push over brick buildings just fine.

As I understand it, 25-34 year olds are having less sex so are more likely to vote for Trump.
I guess that kinda makes sense. Frustration leads to odd choices.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Don't forget those termite thing they get too. No, I like good old bricks and mortar.

Interesting
Well yeah, I have noticed that too. Really, I bricks and mortar house must be more secure than a timber one. Granted the roof would probably go,

Not really, no. Heavier so more likely to injure you when bits come through the ceiling.

Sounds like the 25-24 year olds of the UK need to read this handy guide to get the cohabiting figures up again. Incidentally this is also the best graph I have ever seen where the y axis doesn't start at zero 🙂

But, but, but... the 3 little pigs? Is that not required reading to be an architect?

I thought you just needed a black roll neck sweater, some thick rimmed specs and a Saab.
