I have no skin in the game any more, as my son has left school. However I have experienced the school, its pupil, its activities etc for 27 years. However, I don't have a chip on my shoulder. I wasn't privately educated, and like you, was fortunate to have a good local state school to go to.
I also recognise that most parents make efforts to give their kids the best opportunities in life. Sometimes that may involve spending money on something educational. You with your earnings will be doing exactly the same, just using different methods to achieve those aims.

Not sure if it is still the case (or if it applied to head teachers) but I’m sure I was previously told that teachers in private schools get paid less. Basically the environment (teaching smaller classes, better facilities, fewer unruly kids causing disruption) mean that they are never struggling to recruit decent teachers so they don’t need to pay much. They also get longer holidays (although I think a lot teach on Saturday mornings too). I suspect the head teachers at top schools are on some form of bonus system though.

Not so sure (though one or two specific places do have a reputation). I think a lot will go LibDem in the West Country, which has always had a strong base in the SW. The only thing that would screw up my constituency is if the FOT vote gets split between the LibDems and Labour. Educated, affluent Topsham is solidly Labour at the moment, and that is what the tactical voting sites are suggesting is the best bet for the wider constituency.

Bit of googling suggests otherwise. Not by a lot, but if they go to state school pay scales, they should be able to absorb a bit of the VAT and keep the community together.

It will be interesting to see what happens in seats where UKIP and Reform both stand as I suspect it will confuse some voters. UKIP only standing in 24 seats though.
Couldn’t work out if the Reform party political broadcast this evening went wrong or it did literally comprise of a 6 word slogan on the screen for 5 minutes. I assume that was the broadcast which suggests either they realise their message isn’t very strong or the people they hope to attract aren’t capable of understanding their policies (or need 5 minutes to read 6 words).

The amazing thing is that this whole implosion was predicated on the Brexit referendum, a decision taken to appease a dozen or so backbench nut jobs. The repercussions from that have literally destroyed the Tory party. Astonishing!

Just because people are aspirational for their children does not mean you have to create a fundamentally unfair system that works against the premise of rewarding merit.

Labour are closing a loophole whereby people in private equity get paid "carry" which is really a portion of the profits the PE firms makes when they close out a deal (aka sell the company they bought for a profit). This is really where the big mega bucks come from in PE.
This has always been taxed as capital gains and not as personal income.
Biden and Obama tried to close that loophole in the states but backed down after much pressure - looks like labour plan to follow through with it.
For context, the FT reckons PE has paid itself around $1trillion in carry since 2000. The numbers get quite large quite quickly.
With numbers that big there is a lot of money sloshing about to lobby against closing the loophole.

PE is turning into a national poison within the private sector. It totally distorts how companies do business and promotes short-termism.
When are we going to reach peak-PE? It very much isn't a good thing, particularly in the service sector, because it is fundamentally incompatible with providing a good service.

There's lots of chat we're at peak PE already.
It's quite frothy. To give you an idea, when I joined my company, our public markets team was 5x bigger than our private markets team.
Now the private markets team is around 40% bigger than the public markets team. The growth has been **enormous**

Yes you have to wonder how many companies are left that you can remove management, crank up fees, shrink office space and buy other small companies and piss their employees off, before selling in 5 years while some of the original clients still haven't complained and left.
