Col du Petit St Bernard is now open
Since Thursday this week, the 2188 metre Col du Petit St Bernard pass is open between France and Italy. I cycled up yesterday morning from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, and it's impressive to see how much snow is still up there for the start of June.

Nice pic. Impressive depth of snow. Does make you wonder about global warming a little.

Very high snow falls above 2,000m in the alps this last winter.
Problem was fluctuating temperatures between 1,000m and 2,000m.

Stelvio is still shut. There should have been the Santini Sportive up it today, but it had to be routed elsewhwere.

I had a post pop up on my Facebook feed earlier today saying over 4m of snow on Stelvio, road had been cleared. But the sides were deeper than in that image so may not be considered safe for a sportive

And a little GoPro video from Saturday's climb. It's difficult to capture the cold on the way down though - three jerseys and two wind jackets and it was still cold.

There does look to be a bit more snow than usual. The snow walls are misleading though as they are formed by drifts between the earth banks.
It is very cold at the moment and as you can see in Russ' photos there is even fresh snow.

Super video- some happy memories of climbing it! I enjoyed the brief glimpse of the pink stretch of road on the right on the lower climb. Went up that strip with my son back in 2019 on a v hot morning. Have enjoyed a few coffees on the deck chairs at the cafe just before the Col itself!
Thank you for sharing!
