Stage 19: Mortegliano – Sappada, 157.0km

Start Time 12-10BST.
The first half of the Giro's 19th stage is predominatly flat, while the second half is mountainous, without becoming extremely hard. The race between Mortegliano to Sappada is 157 kilometres long.
The stage begins by riding up the Tagliamento Valley, heading north and crossing the towns of San Daniele del Friuli, Forgaria nel Friuli and Peonis. After Tolmezzo, the succession of climbs leading to the finish line begins: Passo Duron, Sella Valcalda and Cima Sappada, where a short descent leads to the finish line. The roads have narrow carriageways and numerous bends.

At about 5 km to go, the riders enter the Sappada cycle path, with a slightly narrower carriageway. At 2 km from the finish line, a right-hand turn leads onto the final climb (up to 10%) until entering the town centre, where the gradient continues at around 5%. In the last km the road descends for a few hundred metres to the final 400m straight.
Mortegliano
Mortegliano, just south of Udine and three quarters of an hour from the Adriatic beaches, is immersed in a rural landscape with roads lined with rows of trees. Located at the lower end of the high plain, it lies close to the line of resurgences (where groundwater re-emerges to create streams, irrigation ditches and rivers). Prosperous and hospitable, the town offers a broad range of services, arts, crafts and Local Cuisine.
Local Cusine
Agriculture is the main activity in this land and is dominated by maize (blave), wheat and barley. This is followed by other arable crops, apples, kiwis, fruit trees and plants, and vegetables. Vines are also present. Farmers make an excellent polenta flour from top-quality maize, appreciated for its aroma, colour, flavour and consistency. From there comes the so-called “Blave di Mortean“, a well-established patented project and brand name. Two dairy-cheese factories collect and process milk from the many local farms on a daily basis to produce Montasio cheese, ricotta, stracchino and mozzarella.
Sappada
Sappada is an enchanting mountain resort located at 1250 metres above sea level in north-western Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the border with Veneto. It is surrounded by the Dolomites and constitutes a tourist resort rich in history and culture, where many outdoor activities are available and within everyone’s reach.
Local Cusine
Sappada’s gastronomic offerings are a tribute to excellence: gourmet restaurants (including a Michelin-starred one), pizzerias, agritourisms and mountain lodges all offer typical mountain cuisine of the highest quality. Sappada’s globally recognised Local Cusine represents a very important appeal for tourists visiting our town. Many traditional local dishes are proposed and interpreted by the talent of our chefs.
