Bike cleaning when you don't have a hose
No outdoor tap in my new rented house, any recommendations for cleaning mud, etc off my bike?
It's just a hill. Get over it.

Soapy water in a spray bottle?

Let mud dry, brush most of it off, container of warm water (no detergent) and a cloth/sponge outside.

Bucket and brush or hosepipe out of the kitchen window?

I'd be a bit careful with this, you can end up scratching the paint, or even getting small particles of grit/dirt embedded in it.
I would get a sponge and bucket of water and gently wide any mud down whilst it was still wet.

I have a garden pressure sprayer for this very purpose, even though I have a garden and a hose. Just much more accurate and gentle on the bike. Cost about £10 from Lidl - can get in B&Q for only slightly more.

I used to use a muck-offspray and kitchen roll or even baby wipes in the winter when they were on offer for years.
Not the most sustainable

Get a portable (or normal if you have power) pressure washer and a bucket for it to pull water from. I basically had this arrangement from a water butt for years.
If used judiciously a pressure washer is fine.

Bucket and sponge.

Tbh, I have access to a hose yet this is my method.

Wrap it in a tarp to get it inside and then wash it in the bath.
Where do you store your bike?
Do you even need to wash it?

Just no.

Baby wipes (cue the flaming) but don't flush them.

I once had a tub of bike specific cleaning wipes that were made from bamboo. They were very good.

I tried baby wipes but they left a residue which detracted from the paint job.
This may be brand specific.

Sainos value were fine. They do stink however. I didn't have access to a hose or any kit so a bucket was not feasible.

What no tap in the house / flat?

I wasn't going to clean it indoors (flat too small and carpeted) and it was a long way from the tap to downstairs.

What happens if you use bike wipes on a baby?

I am philosophically opposed to using single use wipes to clean a bicycle.

I would really recommend using bike polish if you do have to store it indoors - it makes the cleaning much easier, which is important if you don't have a hose or easy access to water, and the net time spent is much less.

So am I except in certain circumstances. Not sure if thee meet my criteria - hence my comment on flaming. I carry a pack when cycle touring as they have many uses.
As a civil engineer who worked extensively in the water sector personal hygiene wipes are just wrong and it amazes me how blind the manufacturers are when claiming they break down!! The quicker the Govt bans them the better.

What's the difference between bike polish and car polish, except for a smaller bottle for more money?

My thoughts too. I just use whatever car polish I have lying around once in spring then apply a coating of wax. Lasts through the summer. Happens to be good stuff but what's good for one is good for the other.

I'd happily use car wax on any bike - steel, aluminium, carbon or titanium. It would do any harm and is likely to help shed muck before it sticks.

Just seen this on HotUKDeals, which is what I use instead of a hose;

I have a 5 litre model from Lidl with a separate wand but this does the same job and is only a fiver.
They are very efficient on water so I reckon 1.5 litres would be enough to wash one bike, alongside a bucket and sponge/ MucOff spray or whatever else you use. The main drawback of the small size is you'd need to pressurise it a few times during a wash.
