Stages allegedly bust
Looks, as though Stages have ceased trading (the power meter part of the business at least).
As a Stages PM owner, what does this mean for things like the app? Am I suddenly going to be left with a PM that won't work?

My guess is that your PM will continue to work. You won't get any support when it doesn't though.
Just guessing.

That is what I am hoping PB. I am just thinking app updates, ongoing maintenance etc. and whether that would effect connecting/calibration of the PM, all of which is done through the app.
Hopefully I am not left with a dud PM!

Meh. I'm still using apps that went defunct a decade ago or more. I'm more and more convinced that mobile app updates are there more to get info from you than to "upgrade" anything.

Can't you calibrate through your GPS computer? My 4iiii does with my Lezyne.

Fair enough. I am sure it will be fine. Just have to accept that if the actual OM every goes kaput then there is unlikely to be much I can do I guess.

I can but the Stages is not always easy to connect to my Wahoo for calibration (no idea why). Sometimes I need to go through the app.
I actually have a 4iiii on my other bike and it seems to be far less sensitive than the Stages. With hindsight I would have had a 4iiii originally (I bought the Stages before the 4iiii obviously).

I don’t use the Stages app, so there won’t be any change for me. The unit is now almost 4 years old, so there would be no warranty to rely on, so I am not massively concerned. I don’t think I will buy another one, I seem to have learned to gauge an effort pretty well without it and if I need measurements like ftp and such, they are best done on the trainer anyway.
It’s nice to obsess over the numbers, especially the big numbers for hill climbs, but ultimately useless

Why are tests best done on the trainer?
Doesn’t make sense to me.

No wind or traffic conditions to contend with. Pure power.

Hmmm, so only relevant for indoors then.
Indoor power isn’t the same as outdoor, even if you use the same measuring device.
Indoor ftp is only for zones when training indoors, or to track progress, or for bragging rights.

That's a fair point but then I don't see the point in power meters outdoors. Each to their own.

I have said this on other threads around turbo training. The difference between indoor and outdoor power for me is massive, it's close to 20% across 1min, 5min and FTP. I guess I maybe a bit of an outlier but worth noting the two can be well apart as you say.

I just don’t find it as useful as I thought. Last September I did a 25 m TT and got my distance PB, I decided to have only speed on the display. When I then checked the power data, they were absolutely identical to those I do keeping a close eye on the display. So, in practice it was unnecessary. As for post race fffing, there are so many variables and power output is one of them, not even the most important. I would rather have a device that measures accurate wind speed and direction at any point.
Same for hill climbs, comparable times with or without PM. So, what exactly am I paying for, other than some Strava entertainment post race?

It can be a useful data source to plug into software which then allows you to monitor various metrics - CTL etc - that can be useful in planning your form for events, not overtraining etc. Saying that if you've been doing it for a long time and listen to your body debatable how big a difference that makes for a non-pro...
