Is it only worth waxing a new chain? Used chains too tricky to get clean enough for wax?
tempted, rear mech was a black sticky shit show. Not using wet lube again.

you need to completely strip the chain of grease, then wax it, otherwise the chain will still be sticky
to strip grease i use a small ultrasonic tank, three stages: first degreaser, another zap in water+detergent, finally plain water, then dry in an oven at 100c
then wax it (either immerse in hot wax or use one of the drip wax products, like ceramic speed ufo drip)
how often you need to re-apply depends on conditions and the wax, with ufo doing it every 200-300km seems ok
fwiw riding in lanzarote with oil/grease will result in the chain, cogs etc. going black and gunked up in a day or two, the fine volcanic dust sticks to the oil and it's abrasive, with wax the dust doesn't stick, all stays remarkably clean
same in the uk, just try to dry the chain if it gets a soaking, or re-apply wax
the modern solid waxes perform best, main reason i still use ufo is that it's the best option for travelling
there's a ton of test/other info here, stick to the charts as the text is often tl;dr
https://zerofrictioncycling.com.au/lubetesting/
btw the drip waxes and modern hot waxes may appear pricey, but the huge reduction in drivetrain wear makes them way lower cost overall, oil/dry lubes can wear out chains, cassettes and chain rings several times over vs. wax

You could do all that stuff like SG or change your chain once or twice year and your cassette every couple of years. Then spend the time you’ve not spent waxing wanking as it’s pretty much the same thing🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Or spend the time waxing for aero gains

There's the good old Sheldon Brown guide to chain cleaning: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainclean.html

Absolutely classic I’d forgotten about that one.👍

No offence SG but what a faff.
@seanoconn : Use petrol to clean the cassette and chain of oil. Takes a few rinses. Make sure it's clean.
When the chain is bone dry, add Squirt wax lube. Massage it in with your hands so it gets deep into the links with the warmth of your hand (my god, this is all a bit Carry on pedalling). Put the chain on and replenish when nessecelery.
For periodic cleaning' boiling water.
My chain, cassettes last twice as long as Sungod's and they are twice as shiny.

On my third Margarita and open to suggestion. . Is petrol better than de-greaser? Is squirt wax the same as SG’s wax? Are all wax’s equal?
a full strip and re-wax every 2 weeks probably wouldn’t be realistic.

Plusgas in the chain cleaner then 3 in 1 or a drylube. Either way I change the chain every year on all best bike as it doesn't do enough miles to warrant it.

Evening folks,
Busy day in the orifice, but the delights of shirking from home tomorrow. I tried using Squirt wax lube, but communting in winter it doesn't last long I've found. I'll be putting a new chain and cassette on soon and will use it through the summer, assuming we get one, before reverting to wet lube in winter. I tend to get through a chain every year or so, the current cassette is on it's 4th chain so will probably be shot by now.
Well done Seano, will you come and replace mine for me?
Hope SG had an afternoon nap before more bubbly ladies this evening.

Yes, petrol is fine and say, Holts brake and parts cleaner is even better.
Full strip down every 2 to 3 weeks?! Not on your Nelly. I haven't done a full strip down since October. Just keep topping up the Squirt wax lube. All that speed waxing doesn't really add up to half a watt for all the pavlova. I know, i've done it and made my own waxes. Fine if you have the time and you're a tart like SG but if you just want hassle free, off the shelf waxes are inexpensive.. My recommendation is Squirt.
Molten speed wax, £25, ultrasonic cleaner, £45, degreasing fluid, £13, a slow cooker for rice*, £15, thermometer, £5, post and packing, time, space in the shed, some cba...
*The OH won't take kindly to using a pot on the cooker, though I do boil my chain and cassette in an old pot when I do a full strip.
Molten speed wax is good, there is no doubt about that but for the marginal gains over off the shelf wax, nah. I find the Squirt silky smooth. Never will go back to Muc off or any oil lube.

Yep away the next few weeks at least

Away away or just away?

Just away by the main offices

only takes 15 minutes once in the chain's life

to be clear, you don’t immerse your clean chain in heated wax, just the squirt and rub in?
Pinno, מלך אידיוט וחרא מכונאי0 -
That is correct.
I boil the old wax off. Put the cassette rings and chain in a pot and boil it a couple of times. Take the chain out and allow to dry but if you catch it whilst there is a bit of warmth still in the chain, it's a good time to apply the wax, let it cool. Make yourself a couple of S hooks out of a coat hanger and use them to fish the chain and rings out of the pot.

Chain back off bike and being cleaned again as I write. Squirt ordered. Seems achievable with within my can be arsed levels. Sick on black sticky muck.
thanks guys. SG was the catalyst for change. Much appreciated.
