Anyway, all you are doing is agreeing with me that manufacturers are forcing trends and prices.
Bikes have been increasing for years, especially over covid.
Nobody is arguing they jumped up 50-100% in 1 year.
Additionally, if "inflation went mental" 1 year ago (i.e. in Dec 2022 it was at 10.5%), that's a measure of price rises that started in Dec 2021.
Finally, it was high long before Dec 2022.- Genesis Croix de Fer

I've seen fairly good articles on a few sites that make inflation adjusted comparisons, and comparable bikes in manufacturer ranges have jumped about 50%.pangolin said:

In fairness.these are a year or two ago, so the price squeeze now could be slowly normalising prices.
I think decent Chinese groupsets will also help sharpen the thoughts of Shimano and SRAM.

As above, bike retail prices massively outstripped inflation rises.
They are coming down now, the ludicrous £15k bikes are now a couple of grand cheaper and that cost reduction is trickling down slowly to mid range and entry level for some of the big manufacturers.
Having spoken to a couple of my lbs, they think they mid range have about another grand or so to come down in price. The squeeze is being felt in that £3-5k bracket where people aren't buying.0 -
Ignore the comments about inflation, it was super-davo that raised it.pangolin said:

Specialised tarmac s works and pro models have full availability despite a price drop for 2024.
I love their bikes but their pricing strategy seems to have been based on pure greed imho during the pandemic until now.
I bought a tarmac sl5 for £4500 in 2015 and the same model is now £8k and uses the same carbon.
It seems the community of cyclists are realigning their expectations of what value is actually being gained by acquiring a new bike.“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring”

Listening to the Cade media cycling podcast earlier and they have an interesting segment on high end Specialized bikes appearing and then disappearing on the Sports Direct website recently. The guest on the podcast owns a bike shop up in Newcastle reckons that SD have purchased Wiggle and the bikes appearing on the SD website was a bit of a mess up which pre-empts the purchase. Obviously this is purely speculation at this point and the two may have no connection whatsoever. Will be interesting to see what transpires.

I did see a aethos pro (54 only) for £4K which is half of the RRP on Evans, I checked for a Tarmac Pro but alas no bike was available.
No communication from the administrators has to good news for all concerned.
out of possible named suitors SD has the best synergies and possible cost reduction.

You would be an incredibly brave person to buy something of such value from an Ashley owned company.
A fair chance you might get lucky and everything is perfect, but should it not be, I think there would be a large chunk of regret.
Hugely disappointing if the rumour is true 😞

Sounds like the end of the world as we know it. Word is that Mike Ashley has bought the brand names.

looking behind the news makes Ashley the favourite. No TUPE, IT or stock taken by the new owner.
Ashley’s group have sector leading operational capability from their acquisition trail. Regardless of any unused capacity within their storage and distribution system or upscaling volume supported by the group IT makes a compelling proposition. If capacity exists in Ashley’s storage and distribution capacity then there will be only a fraction of transactional costs to dilute profit.
if any of the above is true would mean the other possible suitors bid below Ashley ( if any bids were made) for whole or part of the business but most companies in the industry are reviewing their routes for sustainable growth and any bids for a a potential acquisition would be a deep dive on getting commercial traction, post completion.

What a shame 😟
A sad end.
From Mrb's article above:
"Thanks to an anonymous source, Cyclingnews understands that beleaguered multi-sport retail giant, WiggleCRC (comprising Wiggle and Chain Reaction Cycles) is to lay off its entire workforce.
It appears that this is the final act before sale, with the new owner not wanting to take any staff onward from the business as it currently stands. While a number of staff are currently remaining, the majority of the workforce has been made redundant immediately."
If true, that has ashley's fingerprints all over it.

So, the websites closed down earlier this week. Had an order with Wiggle placed on the 15th March that was being processed, with no way to know when or if it was despatched. However, it arrived yesterday, so as the closure page states, items ordered are still being despatched. Just taking longer than formerly, presumably as most staff have already been laid off.
Sad to see Wiggle in particular go, I've bought the majority of my cycle clothing, bike parts and edibles from there. Always swiftly despatched, and the very few times there were any issues the staff I was in touch with were always helpful and efficient in sorting things out.

Wonder what will happen to the DHB clothing brand?

Mike Ashley,s group will turn out tat like they did with muddyfox. Might take a few years though.

Some of the DHB kit was cracking value. I've worn my aeron jacket all winter in all weathers, will be very sad when it wears out.

Seems the most likely outcome. He has retained the IP and brand names which suggests they will churn out cheap imitations and trade off the name.

He'll do what he normally does, and all to increase his fortune, nothing to do with trying to run a high quality business, selling a good value range of items.
I feel sorry for the people who will have no clue, and continue shopping there, and even more so of course for the employees.

Is it confirmed that Ashley's mob have bought wiggle/CRC?
Glad I've stocked up on some dhb/fohn gear for cycling and dog walking if that's the case

Yep he's got it. Sadly. He's got a few cycling companies / brands now. Muddyfox, Evans, Wiggle and CRC plus there in-house brands and Tri Sports. Probably some others as well.

Will be interesting to see if his usual MO works in this instance. Brands like DHB were the preserve of a lot of experienced cyclists, who I would think would be unlikely to remain loyal to the brand if it goes the way we think and just churns out low quality products under the old name.
Perhaps wishful thinking, but he may find this acquisition isn't quite the money spinner he thinks it will be. Hopefully most cyclists will see it for what it is and vote with their wallets.

I went to look at the new site earlier out of idle curiosity. Looked at saddles and noticed they had Pinnacle listed there already. Going to be interesting to see how it progresses.

Bl00dy PBK as well 🤬
As @MidlandsGrimpeur2 says, I too hope us cyclists vote with our wallets and don't give any business to them/him.
I for one will not support some charlatan buying up ailing businesses merely to line his pockets even more than they already are.
I'll be sticking to the likes of Merlin, Sigma, Tredz and other smaller establishments, and where I can, buying from our LBS's.

Even if I wanted to give them my money, the (yet again) new website seems to be designed to prevent that happening… I wonder if it is a free template….

It'll just be a rebrand of one of their existing sites. Looks a lot like sports direct.

I have not bought from Wiggle in a while now… I use SJC for all things Brompton, I am trying to switch to Lusso for shorts and I am broadening the range of stuff I buy from Aliexpress.
