The Big 'Let's sell our cars and take buses/ebikes instead' thread (warning: probably very dull)

It seems to have surprised a few people on here, judging by the reactions to what I've posted on here 😉

I'm really surprised that you cycle Stevo.

His cycling is equivalent to my accountancy.😉

Not sure how that's relevant to the debate, but why is that FA?

Yes, I remembered your previous post where you said "councils like them because they are a big money spinner".

Sat Nav is probably one of the the contributing factors to why we need LTNs. Nobody is following the signs to get anywhere, we're just going down a residential street because it is calculated as being 2 minutes faster.
0 -
The signs are only likely to get you in the general area, not your specific final destination. coming off the A34 from the south, there are no signs to Oxford Brookes, let alone for specific halls of residence , or streets for example. So it's one of rely on the sat nav, use Google Maps on your phone, or dig out an A-Z and try using that.

A good sat nav like wayz is up-to-date with road layouts within days, flags all restrictions (and navigates around them), gives you real time speed limits and your speed against them etc.
0 -
Exactly, and the satnav will take you down whichever road it calculates will be quicker, regardless of whether it's a road that is suitable for carrying through traffic.

What's the best sat nav when riding a bike? Do they integrate with listening to music?

Pretty obviously, a couple of box planters cost a few hundred quid. A fully networked set of cameras is several thousand. Rising bollards is just another thing to breakdown.

Not sure I have good answer for you; my best experience has been my wahoo but then you input your route beforehand. Can't vouch for music. Cycling is one of the few times in life I am not listening to music.

We seemed to manage quite well in the decades prior to sat-nav. Lazy.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Yawn

There isnt one other than a phone using an app that can follow a predefined route. You can use Google maps, but it is terrible for cycling, at least on country lanes. The maps they use can't distinguish between a road and a footpath, or between a corner and a bend in a road, or which of two roads is the major one.

Though on the plus side it's not going to cost you if you cycle into a ULEZ or LTN zone.

M25 drivers being told to use the train this weekend. This'll be fun!

That's a £317m upgrade to one junction, causing delays for two years. I suspect the improvements in journey times will be overstated in the cost/benefits analysis, and the delays during construction will be understated.
0 -
I suspect it's more likely that the existing junction is knackered and needs to be rebuilt. Everything wears out eventually.
The thread gives a lot of the background.
The major issue is that there is no backup for the M25 for all its faults it is the best way to get between parts of outer London. Apparently they actually considered a tunnel from Heathrow to the A3 as a viable solution.

If you make it to the ULEZ from Byfleet you are very lost.

I'm near junction 9, don't think I'll be making any big plans to drive anywhere this weekend.
The diversion won't take you anywhere near the ULEZ zone though

Thankfully the government is bringing some restrictions to stop local councils abusing their powers in the name of influencing our transport decisions:
Let's hope the regs have some teeth.

All they are doing is making compulsory the process most Councils were already following anyway e.g. consultation processes. It might weed out the odd Council that didn't bother. I'm quite sure why local councils, who hold responsibility for traffic issues in their area, would be abusing their power in 'influencing transport decisions' to manage traffic in their area. It is one of their jobs. Also, why look to stop something that is more popular than not?

I'll take Stevo seriously on the matter when he campaigns to remove the 20mph speed limit in his village that he says makes it safer (IIRC).

Pfft.

Horses for courses Brian. There are a few places where it is appropriate - but only a few. What we need to restrain is the instincts of anti car local officials who have a mindset like yours.
