Visma team say they reckon it saved Jonas 5 seconds yesterday, which is pretty good over 10km.

UCI are taking a look at TT helmet design. About time

The UCI have made a press release regarding Jumbo’s TT helmet, plus several others.
Looks like these monstrosities are living on borrowed time.
Halleluliah.

So a year's worth of research and development - keeping within the UCI's rules - might get flushed down the bog because some people on the internet made a fuss about what they looked like. I don't think that's really something to celebrate

I think it's good they look ridiculous - it goes well with the stupid looking TT bikes.

The UCI have acknowledged the helmets to be within current rules.
They have concerns about their safety and will be investigating along those lines. Research and development often gets binned.
Nothing to do with internet folk.

I suspect they've got through due to omissions in the regulations more than anything else though. The UCI regulations on helmet design cover 1 page of a 75 page technical specification document. There are more pages dedicated to the restrictions on covers over brake callipers and handelbar rules cover 23 pages! I doubt anyone foresaw anything quite as radical as that thing yesterday and regulations get reviewed and amended all the time.

Oh come on, this is the UCI. They're entirely reactive, they're only looking at this because the internet kicked up a fuss.

Absolutely this.

Is it really that much more ridiculous than the Fantasy Island one from a couple of years back? Or the Uno X one from last year?

Jorgensen was exactly full of praise when asked about it, I'm surprised they weren't briefed to say how amazing it is. Have to admit, when I first saw pictures yesterday I thought it was a spoof.

Has there been much fuss on the internet then?
I haven’t been following the story, beyond what I have read on this thread.
I have heard both sets of commentators discussing them, these past two days. It’s true that they haven’t been very supportive.

It's all cycling Twitter has talked about for two days now.
Mostly it's just fairly good humoured piss-taking, like Chris Boardman here:

It looks like one of those photos of a triathlete who has put their helmet on backwards. The currenty regulation gives a maximum length of 450mm so I assume they've taken a fair bit of the tail length of a 'traditional' TT helmet and stuck it at the front instead.

Different race / thread but hey. While watching the TTT today, there was a sequence of the Visma team approaching the intermediate time check up that slope and I was thinking their body shape looks like... what? Some alien out of a Doctor Who? Star Wars? Alien? Anyone know?

Yes, I know.

It's all half measures. If Red Bull hire aerodynamic genius Adrian Newey for Bora, they 'll be riding the next TTT as a human centipede. Take that Visma LAB!

They should be riding steel frames then

I'd ban TT tech; it's pretty much irrelevant for the majority of cyclists - and even in pro racing there aren't enough TT's to justify the time/ money spent on R&D. Leave the tech for the track/ Triathlons.
Just use aero road bikes and aero helmets.....Job done.

The latest on the TT helmet situation is that the UCI have acted.
They have banned the head sock, as worn by the likes of QS and Bora.
They haven’t, as yet, banned the Visma Shoulder helmets.

I mean, there are already a lot of restrictions on bikes. Must be a diamond frame (slower than single peice bikes), tubes can't more than 3 times longer than they are wide etc etc etc.
It's all arbitrary so there's no reason to bin these off for the same reason.

Jeez, it's Groundhog day again as Kirby, despite there being still 70Kms to go, reals off half the startlist as possible winners for today's stage.
He will now repeat the process every 20kms or so.

Yes, I was going to mention the same in regard of bike restrictions. We have also had rider position bans.
The dimpled TT skin suit was cause for some heated debate at the time.

Vingegaard doesn't rate Healy's descending 😅
EF hammered it up the climb and had four on the front for the descent, Jonas just rode up and slipped into third wheel in front of Healy. Bit cheeky, but two TdF wins gives you a bit of leeway. Halfway down the descent Healy suddenly let a 5 bike gap open (he closed it again).
