Emigrating - to a new forum

Yeah, I suspect younger folk (even younger than RC) don't do forums like this at all. Whatsapp, Snapchat, Tiktok, Instagram (even that's getting old hat), so forums like this will end up dying or being small privately-hosted forums or chat groups.
Children do obviously use stuff like Google Classroom, which has chat/forum-like function, but from my experience they don't use those functions, just the bare essentials to keep teachers happy.

I use UKBOULDERING a lot but it’s hardly cycling oriented although there is a Leg shavers anonymous thread but it’s far too lefty and radical for most on here. I also used to post on UKClimbing but I’m currently banned from posting🤣🤣🤣

All the rugby forums I used to use when this sort of thing started pre-Facebook, turn of the millennium, disappeared years ago as Facebook killed them (I still use the FB group for the club I support that came out of their original unofficial website / forum). I suspect the same is true of the fishing forums I used but I haven’t looked for them in at least 15 years. Most, if not all, of those were privately owned sites though and not linked to any publications.
I’m surprised this one has lasted as long as it has and certainly provides more interesting and varied off-topic chat than anything I’ve seen on social media. There’s also a lot of knowledge on the pro cycling side too. I don’t bother with Facebook groups other than my rugby club but if I ever look at comments on anything recommended on FB or IG it doesn’t take long before it just turns into a slanging match. Anything rugby related seems to get taken over by Boks supporters who refuse to believe there is any team other than theirs and where anyone talking positively about a non-SA team or player gets told the Bols would be better. Even cycling stuff gets argumentative for no obvious reason.

I'm reminded I used to be on an American trumpet forum, which was ace for anything trumpet related, and there were a lot of pros on there (I remember that one of the posters was the lead trumpet player from the famous Bernstein recording of West Side Story, the late Wilmer Wise), but (having logged in for the first time in years) I see that only gets a few posts per day now.
Yes, Facebook Groups threads often get into slanging matches, though ones I've started (Wordnerds, Lardy Cake Appreciation Group etc) are niche enough not to have attracted many slangers (I suppose neither attracts 'team supporters' of any description). We've banned discussion of current sports teams on the Exeter group, as they always end up as slanging matches.

I would have probably got several likes. All I did was reply to a landowner who talked of contacting the BMA about climbers on his land ( he meant the BMC British mountaineering council) saying unless it was his GP trespassing he wouldn’t get much of a response.
The guy himself thought it was amusing but some jobsworth thought it might inflame the access issues and banned me.

I'm on Cycling UK forum, fairy active, but quite serious!

Can't log in today on laptop browser. It's getting tedious.

Stevo is having similar problems, raised it on the forum update thread and told Stevo it's because he's a Tory.

I used to have a forum for my local area. I found it really useful, but when I moved there was no equivalent. I don't think one could be started either because companies like Nextdoor have entered the space.

Any chance you could have a chat with George and work out the long term plans? I still can't log in, so that wipes out my most productive posting time.
BR has a low maintenance forum (almost no moderation required) with a small number of active users. It's possible that this is a loss maker for them and so they would prefer it went away, but it would be nice to know. If they do want to keep it, then it requires some work to fix the mess that has been created.

I can't log in on my phone anymore, and that is probably where I used to read and post the most.
In a way, that is a good thing though.

George replied to my comment on the forum update thread to say the tech guys are looking into it, hopefully that will help. Stevo is still persona non grata for more reasons than usual it seems.
Spoke too soon, Stevo is back on, hopefully other issues were sorted at the same time.

I'm back. Looks like there was at least one tory voter on the admin team 😀
Have you missed me? 🙂

I can now log in, but I don't think that solves the long term issues.

George has posted on the forum maintenance thread asking for specifics on devices and browsers used that are having logging in issues, if people having trouble with specific devices could post details on there it may help.
Thanks

I've added some comments, but I think the forum is just going to slowly decline.

I'm down to just my underwear.
I ought to turn the heating down.

Just a little experiment... Plan B? A Google Group Cake Stop, in case this one dies??
Anyone want to try?

Have a look at the MTB section - nobody has posted in any of the subforums there for 2 days.

Worth it as a back up but I don't think we need it quite yet. Anyhow, let's post more bollox and keep it going here...

I don't think it will work. For example, I try to avoid having a google account, so I would be out. Plus, there would be no new joiners so it would slowly die anyway.

Fully agree that we may be small in number now, but the depth of knowledge and experience across members is both interesting and valuable to me.
I think the majority of us are pretty engaged on the socio economic/cultural side of things and the discussions are overwhelmingly civil amongst us.
I would be genuinely sad if BR did pull the plug on us at some point.

Ditto.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Maybe bike radar could do with pushing the forum a bit more on their front page? Although I'm not sure how busy a site it is.
