Most of the rest of the world, possibly US aside, could only dream of having the kind of smart people the UK university sector attracts.
Why on earth would you put them off? Madness.

I presume he's deliberately shit posting to try and go viral, and you're just playing into his hands 😃

Not sure why that is an election thing, but it has been a bugbear for a few years now.
As is Christmas stuff in August.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Lol a bugbear, can you hear yourself.
Guys, it’s a free market and shops do what they think makes them money.

Absolute classic start to the year. Some high winds yesterday caused all trains till 8am to be cancelled or heavily delayed this morning.
Train finally turns up at 8:09, usually 12 carriages, only 4 turn up.
On the train, the guy next to me bites into his train cafe bought bacon sarnie. He looks shocked and opens up the sarnie. There are about five, 2 inch long wafer thing bits of translucent bacon on a big bread roll. Grim.
If that isn’t a microcosm of the state of things; ration levels of bacon on your £5 sarnie on your heavily delayed train that cost you £50 for the return.
But it’s ok lads, the millionaire retirees need their state pension!!!

It's a free market and train companies do what they think makes them money.

In about 10 years that could include me so quit moaning and get working/paying more tax. Someone has to pay for my state pension...

I'd suggest it's only gonna get worse in the run up to the election.

My local train station used to have a guy who ran a small coffee bar, sold papers and snacks etc in the morning. I doubt he made much money out of it but I think he enjoyed getting out and chatting to people and made enough to be worthwhile. He was also a genuine asset to the station helping people with luggage, ticket machines etc.
About a year ago, Southern trains massively increased his rent so it was no longer viable. Now the guy has lost his job, the passengers have lost a useful service and Southern have lost the rent income that they were taking (as well as an informal member of station staff) - GO FREE MARKET!

In defence of free-markets, the trains really aren't one, nor is the example above a good example of profit maximisation.

The trains have been re-nationalised.
FFS, how many times?

They're still trying to maximise ROI.

GTR aren't the landlord, just the operator. Network Rail is the one ripping off tenants.

It's happened with all the hundreds of railway arches as well. I can only assume they are convinced that they can find tenants at the higher rent.

Sell their own over priced products instead of outsourcing cheaper alternatives.
(I wasn't commenting on monkimark's post.)

So they are deliberately running at a loss?
Great.

I'd have thought there are additional externalities to having a food stand, with respect to deliveries etc that play into it.
Clearly posters have not spent any time in London Liverpool Street as the platforms all stink as the combination of smells from Wasabi and Cornish Pasty Company combined to create a sort of fishy sweat smell.

The TOCs are just government contractors. They are told what to charge and what they will be paid. Network Rail is a different beast.

It seems to happen across UK high Streets too...

NR has form for being a poor landlord.

Okay, who supplies the sarnies, sets the prices, and contents?
Who do they pay over-priced rent to?
