New wheels for disc bike

Hi, Ive recently purchased a 2019 giant defy advanced 2 with a 105 groupset. Im no competitor but i like to put in good times on the segments....Can anyone recommend the best upgrade in terms of making my factory bike a bit quicker?

Im guessing upgrading the wheels....if this is the first thing to do then can someone recommend a good pair of light Disc wheels at around the £250 mark?

    £250 probably isn't going to buy you disc wheels that are that much better then the stock ones. Double the budget and you would definitely get wheels which are a fair bit better.

    Just looked up the tyres the bike comes with, you could save a couple of hundred grams and improve the overall ride by changing the tyres and you'd still have the majority of your £250 left.

    chain reaction do a carbon / disc wheel set for about £500 but they have mixed reviews....They are about the cheapest I have found so so far on the web...

    If you wanted a brand name, probably your first call would be Fulcrum 7 or 5 if you can stretch a tiny bit more:

    All should be a step up from what you have right now - but I dont know how big that step would be as I dont know what your wheels are currently.

    If it were me, I would save a bit longer and look around the £400 mark - these would be top of my list probably:

    Someone beat me to it on Hunt. I would personally go for the cycle clinic though - both are built be reputable hand builders but I think cycle clinic uses much better hubs.

    Thanks everyone. I Think I'll save a bit more and get a decent pair around the 400/500 mark. This isn't a cheap hobbie!

    Dont get too hung up on weight - reliability is important too!

    Most of the really light wheels will be 24 spokes - make sure you are not too heavy for that. Disc wheels need more spokes than rim brake wheels because the braking force is applied at the hub and has to be transferred down the spokes to the road, causing a strong twisting force than rim brakes dont need to worry about. At my weight I would be looking for 28 spokes on the rear.

    But serviceability and reliability of the hub, width of the rim are some of the things you should get if you pay more, along with a hand build with spokes all properly tensioned to ensure good life.

    The Cero wheels are well known as great value and worth more than their cost though - hence why I linked them above. If I were lighter I would have tried a set of them now to see what they are like.

    Thanks that has given me a good insight. Seems hard to beat the hunts or fulcrum 4s

    Thanks I maybe was getting too caught up in weight. The cero wheels definitely seem great value. I think between them and the fulcrum 4/5s I'll sleep on it. Thanks

    Bought a pair of Hunt 4 Season disc wheels last September. Very pleased with them. Light (1550gms the pair?), very robust (plenty in the CX world use them) and look fantastic. Very reasonably priced too, £330 iirc. Customer support was superb when I neded some parts to convert the front from QR to 15mm through axle. Phone them and talk to a human, delivery next day.
