    Its not the plastic on the outside that matters. Helmets are like climbing rope - rated at one fall/crash only then dispose. Only you can decide how hard the impact was but based on how you describe it, I would get a new one.
    I'm pretty sure there isn't a climbing rope that's rated as one fall then dispose.

    I should have googled it before posting... I am sure I recall climbing when I was a teenager and being told by the instructor that the ropes were only rated for a single fall. That was a good few years ago and I am sure technology has moved on but looking on the web now, it probably wasnt true even then.

    I think the statement still holds for the relevant part here though - bicycle helmets. Many manufators have some sort of programme to replace a crashed one at cost price, sometimes in return for you sending them the crashed one for analysis. Specialized certainly do this.

    And the theory still holds that you cant judge a helmet or a rope by visual inspection - changes in the structure and its ability to function arent always easy to see.

    I thought that was the case. Back in the day 20 plus falls while working a route would have been the norm and a rope would probably last a couple of years, although you might up cutting off the ends when they went furry. You can't really trim down a helmet.

    I bashed my Specialized Evade when I got knocked off a few weeks back. The only damage visible is a small crack on the lip of the rear but I will not be wearing it again. Insurance can get a replacement for me or I'd be getting a crash replacement from specialized. Just not worth the risk.

    By the way it may be a good idea to use your superior intelligence to give Trek a ring and tell them how wrong they are to alter their Fork Warranty after that poor guys death.

    Be nice to get a free replacement but I doubt Sports Direct will do that for me. I will however take advice and discard this newish helmet. My head is worth a bit more, well to me it is. I have a couple of hardly used Specialised helmets in my cupboard but they are about 8 years old. Do helmets suffer from ageing? Has helmet safety design improved or have they just moved on in comfort and fashion aspects? Suffering this morning from that fall. :(

    Really don't want to be buying anything from Sports Direct for all sorts of reasons. As for the old helmets - the manufacturers give them fixed lives but I can't see why one kept in the cupboard for years would have in any realistic sense degraded. They'll perhaps be less ventilated than modern lids and perhaps a bit heavier but that only matters if you notice it. I would tend to favour 8 year old Specialized over brand new Sports Direct.
