New Tyre Advice

Hi guys,

I'm looking into replacing the tyres on my Carrera for something a bit grippier (especially for the wet) as the stock Kendas on it aren't the best. I really suffered with grip on a couple of night rides I did in December/January.
I've been looking at the spesh ground control/purgatory combo, and have been advised on an ardent/high roller combo as well.
Any thoughts appreciated

What surface and type of riding?

Mostly trail centre but off piste single track too. XC orientated due to routes, occasional path riding with the little girl on the back but reducing as she learns to ride herself.

Maybe you can take a look at swalbe tyes. Noby nick for example is a good alrounder.
I'm happy so far with the ones I bouhgt.

Schwalbe Evo compound, not performance, work well, many trail centres are not that fussy tread, what sort of surface single track?

Any of the above, the stock Kenda tyres that came on my carrera were terrifying on hard wet surfaces.
I like Rocket Ron/Racing Ralph, as they are lighter and a bit slicker than nobby nick.

I use a Ron Ralph combo in summer and duel Nics in winter as local rides are quite muddy, the Nics are the same weight as the Ron and Ralph at circa 460g each, the Nics being a lot lighter than Schwalbe claim, but both mine come in at that weight.

so long as its not muddy an 3C compound HR2 2.3 at the front is a good choice with either another HR2 at the back or somthing a bit faster rolling like an ardent. if its muddy then consider a WTB vigilante or a conti baron black chilli.

If buying new tyres it's worth thinking about width as well, I'm currently running a 2.4 ron on front and a 2.1 ralph on back.

Just looking now. What's everyone's thoughts on conti trail/mountain kings?
Won't be running tubeless as my rims aren't compatable and no plans to upgrade for a while

If you get Conti tyres get the Black Chili compound or don't bother.

Because otherwise the compound is hard and plasticy and doesn't grip very well at all.

Can't you just convert them? Cost approx £30 with tape, valves and sealant

Thanks rookie. Thought it would be something like that.

JGTR, not entirely convinced I've got the know how for that!... I might have a look at YouTube for some how to's though. I had planned to get TL ready anyway so I could swap onto the next bike whenever that happens.

'Tubeless ready' is marketing gobbledegook, almost every folding bead tyre can be made to run tubeless on almost any rim, Tubeless ready wheels may be a bit easier as the well is already filled, but otherwise it makes no odds.

Ok so I think I've decided on a HR2 front and Ardent rear. Looking about 2.2 width but depends on what they've got in stock on the way home!

'Tubeless ready' is marketing gobbledegook

The beads are different and are less likely to be blow off the rim.

What does Tubeless Ready mean?
Tubeless Ready tires are not Tubeless tires. However, they can be converted to a Tubeless tire by adding a sealing fluid. Schwalbe Tubeless Ready tires have a specially formed and coated tire bead. This seals the rim very efficiently and provides safe seating.

So I pickedup the tyres on the way back from work yesterday. HR2 front Ardent rear both EXO and tubeless ready. Might look at converting next pay day but undecideds yet! Gonna fit at some point today ready to try as soon as I can get out!
