Re-spraying a carbon fork

A tiny bit of background. I've recently been given a bike for my eldest son. Its frame is aluminium and the fork HT steel. I'd like to lighten it a bit, and I've also been offered a carbon fork. Problem: the frame is red, the fork is blue (Ribble, I think).

Should it be OK to just rub down the existing blue paint to provide a key, and spray it with a couple of red coats from an ordinary rattle can?

Yes - spraying carbon is no different to spraying anything else.

  • You don't need to take much off the top layer of carbon, just enough to key it so the paint sticks. Any more and you might start getting down to the layers of glue that are keeping the carbon layers bound together.

In short, don't go overboard with removing the existing paint and you'll be fine. Good luck!
